Noori, Priyanka rewrite boxing history of Bihar


Patna, November 12, 2009: Noori Parween and Priyanka of Bihar moved into the finals of the Surya Clinic 4th Junior National women boxing championships at the Moinul Haq Stadium here on Thursday winning their respective semifinal matches.

Bhagalpur girl Noori boxed into the final defeating Vinita S of Kerala 5-0 in the 40 kg section while Saran girl Priyanka struggled to down Anjali Verma of Uttar Pradesh 7-4 to enter 52kg final.

The duo rewrote a history of sort for Bihar boxing as no pugilist from the state had ever entered the final of the national boxing tournaments after the bifurcation of Bihar in 2000.

Another Bihar girl Khushbu Barthe of Katihar failed to make it into the final losing her 50kg semi-final bout against Lal Fakzuali of Sports Authority of India (SAI) 3-14. Khushbu, however, won a bronze medal as a losing semifinalist.

Pushpa Tuddu of Bhahalpur became another bronze medal winner for Bihar when she lost her semifinal bout against Jyoti of Uttarakhand 0-8.
