Ravi Kumar wins silver in Junior World Wrestling

Ravi Kumar displays his silver medal of Junior World Wrestling Championships

New Delhi, August 17, 2015: Indian Wrestler Ravi Kumar bagged the silver medal in the 55 kg free style class at the Junior World Wrestling Championship concluded at Salvador de Bahia, Brazil yesterday.

Congratulating Ravi Kumar on winning silver medal Mr. Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, President Wrestling Federation of India and Member Parliament (Lok Sabha) said “I would like to congratulate Ravi Kumar on his well-deserved win. All the hard work and efforts put in prior the tournament helped Ravi perform his best in the Junior World Championship and bring laurels to the country”.

“The entire nation is proud of Ravi and I wish him all the very best for his all future endeavors” added Mr. Bhushan.

On winning silver medal in the Junior World Championship, Ravi Kumar said “It feels good to win a silver medal at the end, but that was not the goal of this tournament for me- the goal was to come out with a gold medal. I am happy to win silver medal, but overall I am a little disappointed to lose the finals.  But this is not the end, I just need to fine tune everything – more contact on my feet, pushing and pulling at my pace”.

Asian Junior Championship 2015 Gold medalist Ravi Kumar opened his tournament on a winning note, defeating Stevan Micic (USA) in a tough contest with a margin of 12-8. Ravi who was trailing 2-8 against Micic at the break made a brilliant comeback and rallied with 10 second-period points to take the match. Following this win, Ravi qualified for the quarters. In the quarterfinal, he overcame Canadian Samuel Jagas 9-5 and qualified for the semifinals.

In the semifinal round, 2013 Asian Cadet Championship silver medalist Ravi who was trailing 0-8 at the break, again made an excellent comeback routing Mongolian Zanabazar Zandanbud 9-8 and made it to the final.

Unfortunately, in the final, he lost bout to Azerbaijan’s Mahir Amiraslanov 0-10 points and missed out on the gold in 55 kg of free style. He had to be content with a silver medal.

The silver medalist Ravi Kumar will arrive at New Delhi on 19 August 2015 at 0710hrs.

Anirban Lahiri rewrites history with top-5 at PGA Championship

New Delhi, August 17, 2015: Anirban Lahiri’s final round of four-under-68 at the PGA Championship 2015 capped a memorable day for Indian golf. The 28-year-old rewrote the record books with his performance at Whistling Straits on Sunday as he claimed tied fifth place to register the best finish by an Indian at the Majors so far. The previous record was established by Jeev Milkha Singh when he secured tied ninth at the PGA Championship in 2008.

Lahiri (70-67-70-68) kept up the intensity through the week with his four sub-par rounds and signed off with a tournament total of 13-under-275 to finish seven strokes behind eventual champion Jason Day of Australia.

It’s been a meteoric rise for Anirban on the international stage since he won his first Asian Tour event on home soil back in 2011. He continued to enjoy success in Asian Tour events staged in India, adding two more titles to his kitty in the following two years. The year 2014 finally saw him triumph overseas with victories in Indonesia and Macau.

However, it is 2015 that has been the watershed season for the Bangalore lad so far. Playing his rookie season on the European Tour, Lahiri notched up two titles, the Malaysian Open and Indian Open, early in 2015, to rise up to his career-best world ranking of 33. On Sunday, he made a statement at the highest level of the sport, by finishing inside the top-5 at the year’s final Major.

Anirban’s breathtaking performance at his seventh Major has not only brought him the international limelight but also significantly raised the stature of Indian golf. Lahiri is now likely to make big gains in the world rankings where he currently stands at 53 and in the European Tour Race to Dubai where he’s ranked eighth. He will also seal his spot in the International Team for the Presidents Cup, another first for India. Anirban, already in a commanding position in the Asian Tour Order of Merit, is likely to build an unassailable lead there.

Lahiri, who was overnight tied eighth and six off the lead at Whistling Straits, came out all guns blazing in round four with four birdies on the front-nine. He sank three birdies from a range of 17 to 23 feet and narrowly missed an eagle on the par-4 sixth where he drove the green. The 3-putt from 5 feet on the 10th which led to a bogey and came against the run of play was probably the only dampener in his round.

Anirban capitalized on both par-5s on the back-nine, the 11th and 16th, by picking up birdies. He had reached as high as tied third after the 16th. The Indian star also made some important par saves on the fourth, 12th and 17th to keep the momentum going. Finally, the bogey on the closing 18th couldn’t stop him from finishing in the top-5.

Lahiri thus improved upon his previous best of tied 30th at the Majors which he only achieved at last month’s British Open. This was his sixth Major in a row. Anirban’s performance this week will further raise his hopes of representing India at next year’s Olympics. Importantly, a PGA Tour card could also be within sight.

MRF dominate as Tidemand triumphs

Johor Baru, Malaysia, August 16, 2015:   Pontus Tidemand and co-driver Emil Axelsson led a 1-2 finish for Team MRF as the Swedes swept to their third win of the season by claiming the title in the Malaysian Rally, the fourth round of the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship, here on Sunday.

The 24-year old Tidemand, driving the Skoda Fabia S2000, finished one minute, 56.5 seconds ahead of team-mate, India’s Gaurav Gill (co-driver Glenn Macneall).

Gill comfortably won the first round of Asia Cup, sparing over 19 minutes to Fan Fan (Junwei Fang) from China who drove the Mitsubishi Evo EX for South-East Motor team.

Tidemand, making his APRC debut, had triumphed in Australia and New Zealand, and the win on Sunday took his tally to 147 points while 33-year old Delhi-based Gill, winner of the first round in New Caledonia, moved to 104.

With just two more rounds of APRC to be run in Japan (Sept 18-20) and China (Oct 30-Nov 1) and a maximum of 78 points on offer, Tidemand has taken a stranglehold on the championship leaving Gill a mathematical chance of claiming the title he had won in 2013.

Leading by 01:19.9 overnight, Tidemand kept the throttle down on Sunday when six more Stages were run over much shorter distance than on Saturday as the Swede was quickest in five loops while Gill, driving in heavy rains, took the last Stage of the day.

“I had a good day today and absolutely no problems with the car. I was new to these conditions and it was very challenging. But I am happy that I survived and brought the car home safely.
“We have two more rounds in Japan and China, and I looking forward to it. Like I said, all this is new to me, but I want to do well,” said Tidemand.

Press release

An obviously disappointed Gill, winner here last year, had problems with the rear differential of his Skoda Fabia S2000 besides overheating and loss of grip.

“The rear differential stopped working during the first loop and there was no grip. So, I couldn’t drive normally. Then we had heavy rains during the second loop, but we were quicker in the last Stage.

“Overall, it was the worst weekend of my life with all the problems we had due to grass getting into the radiator grill and all that. I now look forward to the remaining two rounds,” said Gill who did not participate in the conventional champagne ceremony as a mark of respect for Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India president Bharath Raj who passed away in Bengaluru on Saturday.

MRF team boss Lane Heenan said: “It was very tough on the cars, but we are happy that both Tidemand and Gill finished. I think it was after very long time that both MRF cars finished here in Malaysia.”

Asia-Pacific Rally Championship: Pontus Tidemand / Emil Axelsson (Team MRF, Skoda Fabia S2000) 1 (03hrs, 05mins, 11.5secs); Gaurav Gill / Glenn Macneall (Team MRF, Skoda Fabia S2000) 2 (03:07:08.0).
Asia Cup (Round-1): Gaurav Gill / Glenn Macneall (Team MRF, Skoda Fabia S2000) 1 (03:07:08.0); Fan Fan / Junwei Fang (South-East Motor, Evo EX) 2 (03:26:58.8); Genki Takeuchi / Naoki Kase (Cusco Racing, Subaru Impreza) 3 (03:32:28.1).

Siliguri double at Chennai; Soumyajit, Ankita are champs

Chennai, August 16, 2015: Time-outs is a double-edged weapon. It can make or break one’s confidence. But national and Institutional champion Soumyajit Ghosh, with his second service intact, took time out at 9-8 and it did wonders. He served to go 10-8 and finished the men’s singles final soon after when his opponent Harmeet Desai served to add more silverware to his collection at the National Ranking (South Zone) Table Tennis Championships here at the Jawaharlal Nehru multipurpose Indoor Stadium today.

The Siliguri man beat PSPB team mate Harmeet Desai and the win fetched him Rs. 66,000. Desai got half of that amount for finishing runner-up. Earlier, Ankita, also hailing from Siliguri, beat here PSPB colleague Pooja Sahasrabudhe in the women’s singles final 4-3.

Despite losing the first game rather poorly, Ghosh showed grit and determination to keep things under control. However, in the fifth game Desai just toyed with his rival, going 6-0 up swiftly and closing out the game at 11-2 for a 2-3 score. But that was all he could do as Ghosh, in the next game, finished it off in spite of letting Desai score three successive points at 8-5.

The Pooja-Ankita final failed to catch the imagination, despite the two playing and missing and giving away negative points. No doubt, there were some good short rallies and clean winners, yet none had a firm grip until the decider where Ankita won a few crucial points. The match swung from one end to another when Ankita, trailing 1-2, picked herself up to put up a good fight and lead 3-2 before letting her rival clone in on. Ankita collected Rs. 55,000 for the title effort and Pooja just half the sum.

The Youth Boys and Girls titles went to Abhishek Yadav and Reeth Rishya, respectively. They also pocketed Rs. 24,200 and Rs. 20,000, respectively, being the winner’s purse.
On fourth championship-point Abhishek got lucky when Sudhanshu failed to send the ball across and netted for the southpaw to heave a big sigh of relief. Incidentally, this was his fourth Youth title, including three in a row. Last year, he began his journey for the first time and notched up a win at the Central Zone, East Zone and North Zone. In between, he missed one at Gandhidham, where the West Zone was played.

The former team mates of PSPB Academy they know each other’s game well and it seemed a give and take as games went the alternative way until the sixth. However, in the decider, Yadav had a distinct advantage and led 7-4 and 10-9 to let things drift a wee bit. Sudhanshu too had a championship point at 13-12 but goofed up the chance.

What was remarkable about the two’s game was that they were never afraid of attacking coupled with the ability to retrieve even the deep, long shots. The final marked several good rallies, but even more attracting were their crispy backhands and down-the-line forehands.

Reeth could finally become the bride that she wanted to be after twice finishing only the bridesmaid last season at the North and East Zone events, at Agra and Durgapur. She had her problems against Ayhika as the AAI girl was ready with her counters to whatever Reeth was sending across. But her change of plan, after being 1-2 down, worked to the PSPB girl’s advantage.

Reeth, until then struggling to land the ball, made good variations and tricked with her cross-court attack which really paid dividends.

“I’ve finally made it. The monkey is off my back and I can breathe easy now,” said Reeth, who trains under Ravi Venkatesh and Vasu at the Maharishi Vidhya Mandir at Chetpet in Chennai.

Except for the semifinal between top-seed Soumyajit Ghosh and No. 2 seed G. Sathiyan in the men’s singles and the one between Ankita Das and Mouma Das in the women’s singles, the other two proved to be one-sided. Both Ghosh and Ankita won their respective matches 4-2.

One can understand the 38-year-old Anindita Chakraborty unable to withstand the onslaught against a relatively younger Pooja Sahasrabudhe, but it is difficult to explain away the 29-year-old Anthony Amalraj, who has a national title to his credit, bowing out without a fight against Gujarat’s Harmeet Desai.

It was a pathetic game that Amalraj played and it reflected on the score and the authority which with Harmeet dismissed his presence without dropping a sweat on a gloomy, sultry day. At least he did put up a semblance of fight at the Inter-Institutional championships in New Delhi against the same opponent before losing the semifinals there.

Amalraj, who was until recently playing for a Polish club, has switched his loyalty and has now joined a club in Spain. One doesn’t know how well he is performing abroad in club assignments, but unfortunately, his domestic graph is steadily going down.

In Youth Boys, Ravindra Kotiyan would have wanted his quarterfinal form to continue but could not replicate it against the experienced Abhishek Yadav. The PSPB left-hander played brilliantly to outlast his RSPB rival 4-1. Abhishek’s teammate Sudhanshu Grover, too, had made it rather easy against Delhi’s Utkarsh Gupta with a 4-1 verdict.

Tough terrain to test Team MRF stars

Johor Baru, Malaysia, August 15, 2015:  The indications are that the Malaysian Rally which is also the fourth round of the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship and commencing here on Saturday after tonight’s ceremonial flag-off, will prove to be a tough test for Team MRF’s Gaurav Gill and Pontus Tidemand who are locked in an intense battle for supremacy.
Following the reconnaissance run on Thursday, both Gill, the 2013 Asia-Pacific champion who trails team-mate Tidemand of Sweden by 34 points, described the 14 Special Stages, totaling 226.56 Kms that will be run over two days, as “tough and extremely challenging”.

Speaking at a pre-event Media conference here on Friday after the shakedown where the two MRF Skoda Fabia S2000 cars were among the quickest, Gill, who won here last year, opined that the rally tracks had knee-high growth of grass which could test the vehicles.

“I have never seen so much grass on a rally route in all my years in this event. It is going to be hard on the cars, but hopefully, we will come through,” said 33-year old Delhi-based Gill who will be partnered by his long-time co-driver Glenn Macneall from Australia.

Echoing Gill’s views, 24-year old Tidemand, who is coming off a second-place finish in World Rally Championship-2 in Finland a fortnight back, felt that as much as the track, the weather conditions could also be a major hurdle.
“The Stages are rough and it is my first time in Malaysia. So, I have to get used to the heat and humidity, but I hope to do well,” said Tidemand who will have fellow-Swede Emil Exelsson beside him.
Gill said his Skoda Fabia S2000 is fitted with a new engine for the Malaysian Rally, and after tweaking the set-up on Friday, he was happy with the car.

At the half-way mark in the Championship, Tidemand heads the championship after wins in New Zealand and Australia and a second place finish behind Gill in the season-opener in New Caledonia.
With three more rounds, including the Malaysian Rally, to be run, Gill can ill afford to drop any more points, like he did in Australia where he packed up after the engine expired.

“It was unfortunate not to get the result we were after in Queensland, but we had a great battle with Pontus and I am looking forward to renewing that competition in Malaysia this weekend,” said Gill.
Team MRF’s Skoda Fabia S2000s have not only been the fastest cars in the APRC in recent seasons, but have also been the strongest and most reliable.

Team MRF boss Lane Heenan said: “The Skoda Fabia S2000 is the most successful S2000 car ever, and we are confident the cars and MRF Tyres are up to the task of winning at each event we attend.

“The APRC gives us such diverse conditions that the car needs to be capable of coping with widely varying roads, whether that be the smooth, flowing roads of New Zealand, or the rougher plantation roads in Malaysia.”

Tidemand and Gill will have to contend with 2005 APRC champion, Jussi Valimaki, a former MRF team driver, returning to pilot a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X after a gap of eight years, besides 22-year old New Zealander Mike Young in a Subaru WRX, and Indonesian Subhan Aksa in a Lancer Evo X.

Ronit and Archana make first year, first show, a box-office hit

Chennai, August 15, 2015: It was first year, first show box-office hits for both Ronit Bhanja of West Bengal and Airports Authority of India’s Archana Kamath Girish as they demolished their opponents in the Junior Boys and Junior Girls finals, respectively, to wear the crowns today.

On a qualifiers’ day out at the ongoing National Ranking (South Zone) Table Tennis Championships here at the Jawaharlal Nehru multi-purpose Indoor Stadium, Ronit beat his state mate Abhimanyu Mitra 4-0 and Archana repeated the score line against Tamil Nadu’s R. Harshavardhini. Their triumphs earned them each Rs. 16,500 and Rs. 13,200 for their efforts.

However, putting the final loss behind Harshavardhini made her day somewhat memorable by accounting for top-seeded Manika Batra in the Youth Girls section’s pre-quarterfinals. The Tamil Nadu girl won 6-11, 11-9, 11-7, 14-12, 5-11, 3-11, 12-10. For the record, Manika was leading 7-0 in the decider! Other seeded players in the section went through to the quarterfinals.

But what was even more worth in weight was how they approached their maiden appearance in a junior event and made most of the first opportunity. Of course, both were sub-junior champions, but when they were taking a fresh step, they were not afraid and it reflected in their game plans, particularly in the semifinals.

However, in comparison, the finals turned out to be mere formalities as they simply bulldozed their opponents within no time.

Qualifiers’ day out
Qualifier Ronit Bhanja, matching and countering every stroke of top-seed Manav Thakkar made the last three games count to outwit the PSPBA boy 4-3. Leading 3-1, the boy from Gujarat was kept engaged with long rallies and counter attacks by the West Bengal lad. Once he pulled his second game back he grew in confidence while Manav was feeling the pressure.

Ronit enjoyed some largesse from his rival who, in a hurry to finish the game, was making far too many mistakes and that too at crucial junctures. But Ronit can neither be blamed for that nor be denied praise for his resolve. With all the shots in his book, he was often overpowering the opponent with some brilliants deep forehand shots.
In the other second final, Ronit’s state mate Abhimanyu Mitra beat Siddhesh Pande from Maharashtra 4-2

A lot of hope was pinned on local favourite and No. 2 seed Selenadeepthi Selvakumar to pass the muster against qualifier Archana Kamath of AAI. But it was a disappointing end for Selena yet a satisfying one. For, Selena came back strongly after being 1-3 down to level the score and again in the decider went 8-6 up from 4-6 down.

She played brilliantly, with perfect execution of some good backhands, to hold the leash. But on match point at 10-8 she squandered the opportunity. Both Selena and Archana saved two match points each, but when the third came, the AAI girl held on. For the other Tamil Nadu girl, R. Harshavardhini, it was not a cakewalk against AP’s Shailu Noorbasha as the former had to bring in all his resources to win 4-2 for her maiden final entry.

Seeds sprout slowly
Men’s No. 1 seed Soumyajit Ghosh huffed and puffed his way into the quarterfinals with a 4-3 verdict against West Bengak’s Souvik Kar, a qualifier, while it was a cakewalk for No 2. G. Sathiyan who made mincemeat of qualifier Sanish Ambekar from Maharashtra. Though from the other top eight players had, more or less, easy quarterfinal passage, both Devesh Karia from Gujarat and PSPB’s Harmeet Desai were made to work hard for their victories. Abhishek Yadav stretched Karia the full distance but Harmeet who, in his second meeting against West Bengal’s Anirban Ghosh, struggled before overcoming the hurdle. The match between Nitin Thiruvengadam and Jubin Kumar, too, had spectators on the edge of their seats and Nitin came up 4-3 triumphant in the tense match.

However, it was the women’s ties that aroused passion as well as curiosity. At the adjacent table, Nitin’s wife K. Shamini was not so lucky and went down 2-4 to one of the oldest and most determined players from the Railways, Anindita Chakraborty. A seasoned campaigner, playing for nearly a quarter of a century now, straightaway stepped on the gas pedal and made Shamini earn her points. But against her guiles, the former national champion was found wanting.

In contrast, both national champion Mouma Das and Olympian Ankita Das raised their games when it mattered the most to beat their rivals Shweta Parte and Reeth Rishya. The latter two named frittered their good winning chances away. Surprisingly, Shweta’s team mate from RBI, Krittwika Sinha Roy went down to Divya Deshpande of Maharashtra without a fight.

The men and women quarterfinals are slated for later tonight but in the Youth section paddlers will play their quarterfinals tomorrow morning.

Indian men hockey team arrives home

New Delhi, August 15, 2015: Subsequent to a successful Europe Tour in Spain and France, the India Men Hockey Team arrived with a feeling of pride at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi today. The team scored an emphatic 2-0 win in a two-match series against France and secured a series win against the Spanish team 2-1 in a three-match series.

The squad returned with many positives that also give them a boost of confidence for the upcoming FIH Hockey World League Final, to be held in India later this year. The team enjoyed an impressive winning campaign as they stepped up defensively on the field and took good control of the game in every match that they played against both the teams.

Speaking from the IGI Airport, Roelant Oltmans, Director, High Performance and Indian Men Team Chief Coach stated, “The team performed exceptionally well in the European Tour which proves that our players are ready to take on greater challenges. The highlight was that we did not give away the ball possession easily to the opponents and with the FIH Hockey World League Final scheduled to take place towards the end of this year, I hope the team do its best and display high-level performances.”

Speaking post landing, Captain Sardar Singh said, “We are in high spirits after the win in the European Tour and have come back with many learnings along with the weaknesses that needs to be worked upon. I think we need to work on converting scoring opportunities through penalty corners and which will be our emphasis before the FIH World League Final later in the year. The young players played exceptionally well and which is gradually adding to our strengths as we have a bigger pool of players to choose from before each tournament.”

Indian hockey team goalkeeper PR Sreejesh gets Arjuna Award

New Delhi, August 14, 2015: Hockey India today congratulated PR Sreejesh the Vice Captain of the Indian Men Hockey team and who is even regarded as the Wall of Indian hockey in recent times, for being nominated to receive the prestigious Arjuna Award this year.

PR Sreejesh the goalkeeper and Vice Captain of the team, hails from Kerala and made his debut with the Indian Men team in the year 2006 at the South Asian Games held in Colombo that year. Since then there is no looking back for the versatile and agile goalie, as he had gone on to be regarded as the backbone of the Indian defence and has successfully held the fort strong on many occasions. It was because of his vital contribution that India won the Gold in the 17th Asian Games last year, when the Final match against Pakistan entered the nail biting penalty shoot out phase. His coolness and not allowing pressure to take the better of him resulted in the opponents unable to find the nets, resulting in the shootout and the game going in India’s favour by 4-2. The win ensured that India not only won the Gold but even booked a berth to the upcoming RIO Olympics 2016. PR Sreejesh was also part of the Silver Medal finishing team during the XX Commonwealth Games held in 2014.

Congratulating PR Sreejesh on the momentous occasion, Mohd Mushtaque Ahmad, Secretary General, Hockey India said “Sreejesh has always made us proud of him, be it his strong play on the field or his cool under pressure situations or his way of motivating his team members during the game, everything about him gives a very positive energy. Today on this occasion where he has been the chosen one for the prestigious Arjuna Award, we at Hockey India take this opportunity to congratulate him and hope to see him winning more such awards in the future”.

PR Sreejesh will receive the award from the Honorable President Pranab Mukherjee on 29 August 2015.

Manav Thakkar storms into junior boys' quarterfinals

Chennai, August 14, 2015: Top-seeded Manav Thakkar of PSPB Academy showed no mercy to qualifier Jignesh Rahatwal as he disposed of the Maharashtra B boy 3-0 to move into the Junior Boys quarterfinals, but it was a real setback for the No. 1 seed Shruti Amrute of Maharashtra A, who bowed out to Shailu Noorbasha of Andhra Pradesh, losing 1-3 in the round of 32 at the ongoing National Ranking (South Zone) Table Tennis Championships here at the Jawaharlal Nehru multi-purpose Indoor Stadium.

But for this major upset, it was business as usual for the others. However, the good news for the hosts’ side was that four Tamil Nadu girls, including No. 2 seed Selenadeepthi Selvakumar entered the quarterfinals while only one boy, Ananth Devarajan, made the grade. He beat West Bengal’s Jeet Chandra 3-2 in a tough battle.

The earlier round, too, saw some upsetting results, including that of West Bengal’s Moumita Dutta, who lost to R. Harshavardhini. The Tamil Nadu girl won 3-0 against her Maharashtra rival Srushti Haleangadi in the pre-quarterfianals to join Abhinaya Ramesh and Yashini Sivakumar in the quarterfinals. In fact, it was a good result for the hosts as six out of four have made progress from the main draw.

But while Delhi’s Srishti Gupta put up a good fight against AP’s Shailu Noorbasha, losing the match 2-3, Aanchal Malhotra, a very good prospect, could not face Abhinaya’s onslaught and surrendered meekly to 1-3 score.

There were to good matches in the Junior Girls section, both going down to the wire. The Shailu-Srishti match saw fluctuating fortunes as they took the alternative game to keep their hopes alive. However, the AP girl got the crucial points when it mattered in the decider to sew it up.

As for the Selenadeepthi and Renuka Aswin tie, the Kerala girl leveled after being 9-8 to win the second game and also the third to go up 2-1. But egged on by the local crowd and with a game plan change, the No. 2 seed from Tamil Nadu showed presence of mind in the fourth to level. From there, it was smooth sailing despite some pressure showing on her face when she gave away a couple of points on match-point.

Similarly, two matches in the Junior Boys section stood out for their competitive nature. The first between Telangana’s Snehit Suravajjla and West Bengal’s Abhimanyu Mitra, too, had a pattern to it with the players taking alternative games. However, in the fourth when Abhimanyu made it 2-2, he surged ahead in the fifth to shut the shop close on his Telangana rival.

Tamil Nadu’s Ananth Devarajan had his nervy moments very early in the match when Jeet restored parity at 1-1. Still he did not drop guard and went 2-1 ahead only to lose the next game in extended points. But Ananth did not take any chance in the decider and went about the task very methodically to shut his West Bengal opponent rather comfortably.

Meanwhile, the qualification matches in the Youth Boys and Girls sections got over and it is time for some hot performances as the men and women seeds jump into the fray from the second round of the main draw tomorrow.

However, the focus will once again be who win the Junior Boys and Girls titles.

Gaurav Gill and Pontus Tidemand set to resume rivalry in Malaysia

Johor, Malaysia, August 13, 2015: India’s top rally driver, Gaurav Gill (co-drive Glen Macneall) and his Team MRF Skoda team-mate, Pontus Tidemand (co-driver Emil Axelsson), are set to face new challenges in the Malaysian Rally, fourth round of Asia Pacific Rally Championship. The south Malaysian province of Johor, which connects the mainland to Singapore, will host the rally amidst tropical forests and rubber plantations from August 14-16. The Malaysian Rally marks the Asian swing of the championship after the Pacific rounds that concluded with the International Rally of Queensland.

The tropical conditions with temperatures in the low 30s and high humidity of 60-80 percent, and not to forget the torrential showers, will pose plenty of challenges for the drivers. Dehydration leading to loss of concentration and cramps are real dangers that drivers have to deal with over the next three days. The drivers tend to lose 3-4 kg of body weight during the course of the rally.

“Getting a grip on the conditions is the key in Malaysia. It’s a very demanding rally because of the heat and humidity. It’s easy to lose concentration on the narrow tracks through the forests and plantations. And when it rains over here it really pours. The tyre choice is also critical because the conditions keep changing,” said the Indian driver.

Gill, whose championship bid suffered a setback in the International Rally of Queensland when the engine of his Skoda Fabia S 2000 blew on the second day while leading the rally over his Swedish team-mate. The Indian ace is keen to return to the top step of the podium in Malaysia. Gill goes into this round of championship on the back of his experience and familiarity of the conditions in this tropical country. He won in Malaysia last year and has finished second four times.

For Tidemand, it will be the first time out in this part of the world. Coming from much cooler and drier conditions in Europe, he will need to acclimatise quickly to the heat and humidity. Tidemand goes into this round with a healthy lead over Gill who had a DNF in Australia. But as the Swede has shown he can adapt very quickly to alien conditions.

For this rally, Gill’s MRF Skoda Fabia S 2000 has got a new engine after the previous one suffered terminal damage in Australia. “It’s important for me to win over here to keep Pontus in sight after my setback in Australia. I have the experience of driving and winning in Malaysia. I am looking forward to resume our fight. Pontus is a very good driver and he has shown that he can adapt to the local conditions very quickly,” said Gill.

The Malaysian Rally comprises 14 stages over two legs covering a total competitive distance of 226.56km of special stages. For this year’s event, the second and the ninth stages are new additions and they will be run twice. The first leg of the rally will consist of eight stages covering a distance of 160.64 km, while the second leg that will be run on Sunday will cover a distance of 65.92 km spread over six stages. The Malaysian Rally will get underway with a 2.14km shakedown on Friday.

Clean-slate beginning for West Bengal and North Bengal paddlers

Chennai, August 13, 2015: It was a fresh day at office for some of the West and North Bengal players who, after serving a year-long ban, returned to action at the ongoing National Ranking (South Zone) Table Tennis Championships here at the Jawaharlal Nehru multi-purpose Indoor Stadium.

Three from West Bengal—Jeet Chandra, Ronit Bhanja and Anirban Ghosh—and two from North Bengal—Akash Nath and Subhajit Malakar—have put their past behind and performed well to qualify for the Junior Boys’ main draw today. Similarly, three Junior Girls, Moumita Dutta (West Bengal), Puja Paul and Ankita Biswas (both North Bengal) have earned their berths and await the main draw, the matches of which will be played tomorrow morning.

All these boys and girls were slapped a one-year ban after a clean-up drive the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) had launched last season following complaints of age-fraud cases which the CBI’s Sports Integrity Cell investigated. Bases on its report, the TTFI had to discipline the players for falsely represented their age.

On a day with action limited to qualification matches in both the junior and senior sections, two rounds were held in men’s singles while the women played just one round. They would return to the table tomorrow to complete the group matches.

However, in the junior section the group engagements are over and 32 boys and 40 girls have entered the main draw where they will be joined by the eight top-ranked players in each section.
With seven girls qualifying for the main draw from Tamil Nadu, they have overtaken the boys as only six of them have managed to make it to the second stage. The girls have yet again proved the point that they are not only one better upon the boys in academics, but also in sports.

The girl qualifiers include Abhinaya Ramesh, Yashini Sivashankar, Deepika Neelakandan, Knowishika Venkateshan, Harini Udayakumar, Kokila Sureshkumar and Mahima Jain while Sachin Viswanath.S, U. Gokul Uday Kumar, Jaishankar Rakesh, Ananth Devarajan, Sankaran Suraj and Malesh Vijaya Kumar have entered the second stage from the boys’ category.

As for the Junior Boys’ seeding is concerned, PSPBA’s Manav Thakkar, who has had a wonderful season last year, leads the points table and would be the No. 1 seed here. He will be followed by Siddhesh Pande of Maharashtra A, Lalhunhlua (PSPBA), Shubham Ambre (Mah-A), Anukram Jain (PSPBA)—he won the sub-junior singles title yesterday—Abhimanyu Mitra (WB), Shaurya Pendekar (Mah-A) and Ali Mohammad of Telangana.

In girls’ section, Shruti Amrute (Mah-A) will be the top seed while Tamil Nadu’s Selenadeepthi Selvakumar will be drawn in the second half as No. 2 seed. The other seeds that follow include Dena Bank’s Mansi Chiplunkar, Naina (Telangana), Ashlesha Trehan (Mah-A), Varuni Jaiswal (Telangana), Tanisi Kirtani (Goa) and Harshavardhini (TN).

The top-ranked eight men’s players, including reigning national champion Soumyajit Ghosh, Harmeet Desai, G. Sathiyan, to name a few, will be seen in action only from the day after as they are expected to get first-round byes. Similarly, the top eight women seeds too will been seen in action from the day after.
