Mudit, Tanushree make waves at Amman

New Delhi, August 12: India’s Mudit Dani and Tanushree Das Gupta made waves at Amman as they entered the semifinals of the Junior Boys and Girls singles, respectively, at the Jordan Junior & Cadet Open yesterday evening.

Mudit defeated Abdulaziz Shulabi Bu of Saudi Arabia 11-7, 10-12, 11-4, 11-8, 11-8 in a thrilling quarterfinal to earn the right to meet top-seed Ali Alkhadrawi, also of Saud Arabia in the semifinals. In the earlier round, Mudit had blanked out Swede Filip Karlsson 4-0 (11-7, 11-4, 11-4, 11-7).

Last year, too, Mudit had travelled to South America to compete in the Gautemala event, which is again is an ITTF Junior Circuit programme, and excelled. Continuing in the same vein, he has ventured into the Amman event for the first time and is reaping the rewards.

However, it was the unseeded Tanushree Das Gupta who turned several heads at Amman with her excellent performance, particularly when she beat Azerbaijan’s Zhou Chuyi in a tense quarterfinal. The 15-yer-old India put up a gritty performance to Zhou 4-3 (11-8, 7-11, 5-11, 14-16, 15-13, 11-7, 11-8) to go through. She will meet top-seeded French girl, Pauline Chasselin in the semifinal.

The teenager from Meghalaya was down and out at 1-3 but a fine come back in the fifth game helped raise her level which she won 15-13. From there, a new-found energy saw her through as she completed the task in style winning the last two games with a lot to spare.
