Substitute Rahul Shah struck in the 98th minute as Bihar Police edged past Samaleshwar Sporting Club, Cuttack, 1-0 and moved into the semi-finals of the 18th All-India Chaturbhuj Ram memorial football tournament at the Khudiram Bose Stadium in Muzaffarpur on Friday.
Both the teams were locked goalless in the first half.
The thin victory margin and the timing of the winning goal gave ample proofs of the high-voltage drama enacted on the ground through out the match. Bablu Thapa of Bihar Police made a threatening move in the 11th minute of the game with his solo run down the flank. But Thapa's long-ranger struck the crossbar for a goal kick.
Cuttack bounced back with in a few minutes as Sushil Munda took a powerful shot from near top of the penalty box but it went a begging. Cuttack team made another attack in the 22nd minute through Suna Ram but this time agile Shyam Bahadur of Bihar Police cleared the ball.
After a barren first half both the team went into attacking mode with 4-2-4 combination. Bihar Police got an opportunity in the 51st minute but Navin Thapa’s shot well collected by Cuttack goalkeeper Nitendra Patnaik. The closing moment of the match saw an evenly matched battle as both the teams launching attack and counter attack. Bihar Police Rahul took the advantage of the a bit slack defence of Cuttack team as he pushed the ball home after getting a well measured pass from his teammate in the 89th minute of the game.
