Vijay, Rishi, Srishti win Airtel chess crowns


Patna, December 25, 2008
The fourth Day of the fourth Airtel Mastermind inter-school chess championship at Rajendra Nagar Government High school hall here had not witnessed notable upsets as overnight leaders in the respective age group sections coming out of the pack safely to emerge deserving winners.

In the boys’ under-16 section, overnight leader Vijay Kumar played a lackluster draw in the sixth and final round to take his tally to 4.5 points. The half point lead was sufficient enough for him to capture the crown. Three players Rupesh Ranjan, Nilesh Shankar and Ashutosh Anand with 4 points got the second, third and fourth positions respectively under the progressive score rule.

The boys’ under-14 group saw Rishi Shanker becoming the champion with 6 points to his credit in as many rounds. Md Dilshad, Rahul Raj and Vikas Kumar Dwivedi with 5 points each claimed the second, third and fourth spots.

Under-12 boys group was the most exciting one. The result itself showed the intensity of battle as four players Siddarth Khanna, Ayush Anand, Sameer Sengar and Kumar Mayank collected five points each out of six-round play.
Siddrath Khanna finally took the title after winning lightening matches played among the four players.

Siddhant Gautam won the boys’ under-10 title with full six points under his belt. Ashwani Arya (5), Vikas Kumar (5) and Gaurav Anand (5) bagged the second, third and fourth position respectively.

In the girls’ under-16 section, Pammi Rani won the title while Srishti Gautam with four points clinched the under-14 crown. Ankita Raj, Priyanka Kumari and Sukrit (all three points) got the second, third and fourth positions respectively in the girls’ under-14 section.
Aditi Arya with three points to her credit claimed the girls’ under-12 title while Usha Arya won the girls’ under-10 title scoring 3 points.

Labour Minister Awdhesh Narain Singh and Airtel (Bihar and Jharkhand) C.O.O. Shishir Kumar gave away the cash prizes and trophies to the rank holders. Arvind Kumar Sinha, secretary, All Bihar Chess Association, Dr Anil Kumar Singh, principal, Maharana Pratap College, Dr Rashmi Prabha, principal, Government High School, Rajendra Nagar and Mritunjay Tiwari, president, Bihar Players Association were present at the function. Tournament Director Rakesh Ranjan welcomed the guests while Shakuntala Sinha, senior member APWAD (the organizer of the tournament) proposed a vote of thanks.
