The fourth edition of the Airtel Mastermind chess championships for school students began at the Rajendra Nagar Government Girls School hall here on Sunday with a colourful opening function.
About 150 players drawn from various schools of the state have been participating in the event which is being organized by Association for People Welfare and Development (APWAD) to provide a competitive platform to budding talents.
S Gangwar, DIG (Patna Range) and Manish Upadhaya, Zonal Business Manager, Airtel inaugurated the tournament playing a board. Mirtunjay Tiwary, president, Bihar Players Association, Dr Rashmi Prabha, principal, Rajendra Nagar Government Girls High School and Arvind Kumar Sinha, secretary, All Bihar Chess Association graced the inaugural function. Rakesh Ranjan, director, tournament welcomed the guests and also proposed a vote of thanks. Senior athletic coach Abhishek Kumar anchored the event in his charming way.
On the opening day first round matches were played and as expected experienced players faced no difficulties to win their respective encounters. Sidhant Gautam, Pankaj Kumar, Ashwani Arya and Abhiyuday Bhartiya were among the prominent winners in the Boys' under-10 section.
