Archery World Cup Stage II: India win recurve team gold medal

Patna, May 9, 2009
India’s fearsome threesome of Jayanta Talukdar, Rahul Banerjee and Mangal Singh Champia, earned India a gold medal in the recurve team event of the archery World Cup Stage II at Porec, Croatia, on Saturday.

According to information reached here, India defeated Russian Federation by 220 points to 218. Italy won the bronze beating China 221-219.

This was the trio’s second consecutive team gold medal after having won the first at the Santo Domingo World Cup Stage I last month. Then India had beaten Great Britain in the final.
After India’s disastrous world championship in 2007, Jayanta, Mangal and Rahul were instrumental in getting India the gold medal at the 15th Asian Championship at Xi’an in China the same year, the gold medal coming after 18 years.

The trio got India first team gold medal in the World Cup series winning at Antalya (Turkey) in 2008. This was followed by two more this year at Santo Domingo and now at Porec.

Russia trailed by one point (54-55) in the first end, but could recover in the second end to tie the match at 108 points at halfway mark.

India could take the lead in the third end with 164-162. Russia showed their best in the last end, but it was not enough to beat the Indians.

The women’s recurve team, however, failed to clinch the bronze medal losing the play-off to Ukraine at 197-212. China beat France 214-200 for the gold medal.

It was pretty good performance in dusty conditions for India as they take the lead in the first end with 53 points against a low 49 points by their opponents. The Indians, however, could not manage the windy conditions as they did in the first end and went on a wayward shooting, 7-9-8-8-9-6, all on the right side of the target. The Ukrainians tied the match at 100 points. Ukraine took the lead in the third end with 154-150.

The last end for India was quite stressful as the last arrow slipped from the arrow rest and five seconds were left on the clock… it landed on the 5 ring. Ukraine confirmed their win with a great 58-point end.
