Vipal Subhashi won the Bihar State senior FIDE rating chess championships with 8 points at the end of the ninth and final round play at Madhubani on Sunday.
P K Singh, Saurav Roop and Prem Vardhan were in a three-way tie for the second position as all the three had collected 7 points after the end of final round play. PK Singh was declared second with better progressive scores while Saurav Roop and Prem Vardhan got the third and fourth positions respectively.
Vipal, who played magnificently through out the tournament, beat talented Minhazul Haq in the penultimate round. Vipal outplayed Himanshu Shekhar Sharma in the final round to collect full points.
On the second board, PK Singh, who beat Krishna Prasad in the eighth round, skipped the ninth round play against Prem Vardhan due to illness.
On the Board No. 3, Saurav Roop played a calculated game to outwit defending state champion Ashutosh Kumar.
Madhubani District Magistrate Pankaj Kumar, who was the chief guest atthe closing function, gave away the prizes.
