Andhra boys win 24th National sub-junior tenni-koit title; Kerala clinch girls' crown

It was a repeat of last year’s final. Defending champions Tamil Nadu were pitted against last year’s runners-up Andhra Pradesh for the boys’ crown of the Star India 24th National sub-junior tenni-koit championships at the Patna Central School courts here on Friday. Tamil Nadu boys as a team played well till the final. However, in the final it was Andhra Pradesh day.


Andhra Pradesh turned the table and made a clean sweep of Tamil Nadu 3-0. In the first two singles Andhra boys D Chandu and Naveen gave their side 2-0 lead. And in doubles, Chandu pairing with Naveen blanked Tanil Nadu pair of Madan and Raghupathy to clinch the match and coveted crown.

Kerala won the girls’ team title defeating Andhra Pradesh 3-2 in a nail-biting finish.

A Naveen of Andhra Pradesh clinched the sub-junior boys' singles title defeating his statemate D Chandu 22-20, 21-14 in the final. The girls’ singles title went in favour of M Nithya Laxmi of Tamil Nadu who beat Bhuvaneswari of Pondicherry 21-12, 21-14.

Tamil Nadu pair of Madan Kumar and S Ragupathy claimed the boys' doubles title beating Harshit Gowda and Kishore of Karnataka 21-16, 21-12 in the final. Kerala combination of K Namitha and Sree Parvathi defeated Maharashtra pair of Bhargavi and Devika 21-16, 21-4 to win sub-junior girls' doubles crown.

The mixed doubles title was claimed by Tamil Nadu pair of V Thirupathy and P Savita Kumari who beat Orissa pair of Suhil Jena and Namratha Jena 22-20, 21-15 in a pulsating finish.

Saloni Narayan, assistant general manager, State Bank of India, who was the chief guest at the closing function, gave away the prizes. Vice-chairman of Patna Central School, BK Sudarshan, Bihar Olympic Association secretary, Mushtaq Ahmad, Tenni-Koit Federation of India secretary BS Nagraj, Jagmohan Gautam, PK Chowdhary, Patna Central School principal, SP Singh, vice-principal, OP Singh, Raj Kumar Singh, Satish Kumar Raju and Dr Sudhir Singh were among the dignitaries present at the prize-distribution function.

Niraj Kumar Pappu, secretary, Bihar Tenni-Koit Association welcomed the guests and SB Prasad, president of the association, proposed a vote of thanks.
