Three share lead in Bihar U-19 chess

Local lads Praveen Kumar, Nilesh Shankar were among the three players who shared the lead with 3.5 points each at the end of the fourth round of the Bihar State under-19 chess championships being held at Delhi Public School, Danapur on Sunday. Saurav Anand of Muzaffarpur was the third to join the lead.

Ganesh Kumar (Patna), Kaushalendra Kumar (Chapra), Piyush Kumar (Bhagalpur), Kamal Karmakar (Kishanganj) and Amaresh Kumar (Vaishali) were at the joint second position with three points each.

In the girls’ section, international rated Srishti Gautam (Patna) and Pallavi Kumari (Bhagalpur) were atop with three points at the end of as many rounds. Surabhi Kumari and Kritika Chaowdhary (both Muzaffarpur) occupied the second spot jointly with two points in their credit.

Pravin Kumar (3.5) drew with Ved Prakash Sinha (3) and Kaushalendra Kumar (3) drew with Rishi Shankar (3).

Girls’ third round: Srishti Gautam (3) beat Swikriti Swarna (1), Kritika Chaudhar (2) beat Sweta Singh (1), Riya Singh (1) beat Prgya Raj (1) while Minakshi Kumari got a bye.

Earlier on Saturday, the tournament got off to colourful start with all the top-ranked players won their respective matches easily.

B Vinod, Principal, DPS, Patna, inaugurated the tournament playing a board with a participant. Khurshid Ahmed, MD, Advantage Support, was the chief guest while All Bihar Chess Association secretary Arvinda Kumar Sinha and joint secretary Sanjeev Kumar were present at the opening function. Patna District Chess Association secretary Rakesh Ranjan welcomed the guests.
