Anand is Chess King

BONN: October 29
Viswanathan Anand kept the World title with a 24-move draw in the 11th and penultimate game of the 12-game World Chess Championship final in Bonn. The Indian playing with white pieces against Vladimir Kramnik took an unbeatable 6.5-4.5 lead to retain the title.

The game opened in a Sicilian Najdorf, as Anand was expected to go for a draw and Kramnik was expected to thwart all such attempts to try and force a win to keep himself alive in the match and take it to the 12th game and then force a tie-breaker.

The game ended in a draw after 24 moves as Kramnik failed to find a win despite trying to complicate the game.

Anand earlier won three games, the third, fifth and sixth and lost the 10th in a match that looked one-sided till Kramnik brought back some life with a win in 10th game.

In the 11th game, Anand needing only a draw managed that in a game that had a 1. e4 start and led to a Sicilian-Najdorf, which Kramnik rarely plays. Kramnik went all out for a win and tried to create wild and unstable positions to throw Anand off-guard, but the Indian Grandmaster was up to the task.

In fact as Kramnik overstretched in a do-or-die battle, he actually allowed Anand greater play and may well have lost. But in the end the game ended in a 24-move draw.

According to the pre-match rules, the two players share the purse of 1.5 million Euros equally.

NIIT congratulates Mind Champion Anand on retaining title

NEW DELHI: NIIT chairman Rajendra S Pawar congratulated Viswanathan Anand for retaining the world title. In his message Pawar said, “We congratulate NIIT Mind Champion, Vishy Anand on becoming the undisputed World chess champion.”

NIIT have been Anand's sponsors for almost a decade now.

“Anand has displayed a grand strategy in 2008 by choosing the games that he wanted to win, foregoing an important tournament like Bilbao to focus on and win the ultimate match against Kramnik,” he said

Anand beat Kramnik 6.5-4.5 with one game to spare in the 12-game match in Bonn. That helped the Indian Grandmaster retain the title he won in the Linares-Morelia Linares tournament last year. It also makes him the first player to win the official World title in three formats.

He won the World title for the first time in a 128-player championship format in 2000 when it was played in India and Teheran, Iran and the tournament was sponsored by NIIT.

That was followed by a closed tournament in Linares-Morelia last year and now in match-play against Kramnik. It also ended speculation over Anand's ability at the highest level in matchplay.

Anand loses 10th game, still half point away from world title

Bonn, October 27

Viswanathan Anand suffered a setback as he was beaten in the 10th game of the 12-game World Chess final, where challenger Vladimir Kramnik, playing with white pieces fought his way back into the match with a 29-move win. The win for Kramnik narrowed the gap to 6-4 for Anand.

The NIIT MindChampion, Anand still needs only a draw in one of the two remaining games to emerge champion once again.

Kramnik on the other hand needs to win both the 11th and 12th games to force a tie-breaker in the title match.

Russian Kramnik stayed alive in the match as he struck back by cracking through

Anand's defence in 29 moves from a Nimzo Indian defence. It was Kramnik's first win after three losses and six draws in previous nine games. Anand, who led 6-3 after nine games, faltered as the Russian finally seemed to have found his form.

In the 10th game, which Anand needed just to draw to emerge champion, Kramnik adopted an aggressive posture in the Nimzo Indian defence from the Indian. The game went into the three knights defence, which Garry Kasparov has used effectively in the past against Anand. But Anand on that occassion had salvaged a draw, but here Kramnik went off that line and ensured a lease of life for him in a match that seemed to spell doom for him after three losses in four games from the third to the sixth games.

worked his way into a slight advantage midway through the game and even as Anand continued to have his chances to draw, the Russian forced his way through and took charge of the c4 square and from thereon built the pressure which forced the Indian to resign after 29 moves.

12-game final carries a purse of 1.5 million euros with both getting equal amounts regardless of the result.

Anand half point away from retaining world title

Bonn, October 6

World Champion Viswanathan Anand kept his three-point lead intact as he held off challenger Vladimir Kramnik to draw the ninth game on Sunday night. The draw brought Anand closer to the world title, which he gets to keep on reaching 6.5 points.

The draw in ninth game gave NIIT MIndChampion, Anand a 6-3 lead with three more games to go in the 12-game World Chess Championship final in Bonn. Anand needs just one draw to win the title while Kramnik needs to win all three remaining games to send the match into a tie-breaker.

The 45-move ninth game was the second longest after the 47-move win which Anand achieved with white in the sixth game. Anand has won three games, the third, fifth and sixth and drawn the rest.

The ninth game with Anand playing white saw an opening in the Queen's Gambit declined and in the anti- Meran variation. Kramnik held the stronger position towards the end, but was unable to convert that advantage into his first win. Anand played the end perfectly to hold the Russian at bay and keep his three-point lead.

The two players will share a purse of 1.5 million euros regardless of the result.

Kramnik, who has not won with black in last two years, gave a strong display and did have Anand struggling but the Indian held on. Towards the end, Anand played perfect defence, while Kramnik was unable to squeeze the win he so desperately needed to keep some interest alive in the match.
Anand did make an attempt early to see if he could finish off the match in the ninth game itself – having won the third, fifth and sixth games earlier on.

Kramnik accepted the challenge and entered the sharp Anti Moscow Gambit Kramnik finally got a novelty in on 12th move. He got a sharp position that gave him a chance to play for a win, which he gladly accepted.

Black (Kramnik) held a good position for long but Anand managed to stay in and draw the game. In the 10th game, Anand will have black pieces.
Kramnik needs to win all three remaining games to send the match into a tie-breaker.

Anand, the NIIT MindChampion, now needs just one point from remaining four games to be crowned world chamion yet again.

The game ended in a 39-move draw from Queen's gambit declined as Anand chose the sharp Vienna variation.

There was much speculation if Anand would once again play in Slav, as he did in previous two black games, which he won. But he was clearly not going to overdo it.

The next game is slated for Sunday with Anand having white pieces.

Anand draws seventh game, still leads by three points

Bonn, October 23
Viswanathan Anand was unable to make it a hat-trick of wins, but nevertheless moved closer to retaining his world title with a draw in the seventh game that gave him a 5-2 lead over Vladimir Kramnik in the 12-game World Chess championship final.

With the match moving into the second half, Anand had white for the second game in a row. This is because the games are played in pairs and the regulations switch the day that the players have white in this pair at the half way stage.

NIIT Brand Ambassador Anand now needs just 1.5 points from five games to close the match and win the world title yet again. The draw gives Anand a 5-2 lead with the Indian needing just 1.5 points from five games to retain his world title. Anand has won the third, fifth and sixth games in the 12-game final.

The game opened in the slav defence, and Kramnik played a line which was more safer. Kramnik invited complications and no sooner had he done that, Anand decided he also wanted to fight.
Kramnik slowly began to look confused. By the 15th move, Anand had a little extra space and for the moment Black's knight is not on a great circuit.

Anand playing in a dominating manner, did so once again. Kramnik had to jettison the c pawn for counterplay. This however prevented any chances Black (Kramnik) may have had on the kingside. Ultimately, neither gave way and it looked like a fortress.

The duo finally agreed to split the point after 37 moves.

The World Chess Championship is taking place from October 14 – November 02, 2008 in the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn.

The match consists of twelve games, played under classical time controls: 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, 60 minutes for the next 20 moves and then 15 minutes for the rest of the game plus an additional 30 seconds per move starting from move 61.

The prize fund is 1.5 million Euro (approximately 2.35 million US Dollars) including taxes and FIDE license fees, and is split equally between the players.

Anand continues his good show, takes 3 point lead

Bonn, October 21

Viswanathan Anand may well have shut Vladimir Kramnik out of the match with a third win in the sixth game of the World Chess Championships as he continued his complete domination over his rival.

At the midway stage of the 12-game match NIIT Brand Ambassador Anand moved onto a three-point lead with a win in the sixth game that put him 4.5-1.5 ahead, surely a massive lead at this stage.

Playing with white and with a two-point advantage Anand piled on more misery as he played a solid game in the Nimzo Indian. Anand knowing his rival was at his lowest played a sharp line and went in for a positional game.

as the game looked interestingly poised with Kramnik playing solid in reply, Anand unleashed yet another novelty on the ninth move. Kramnik took up the challenge, probably in the hope that since he was already way behind he might as well be aggressive with black. Anand went for the jugular and accepted the challenge to attack.

Anatoly Karpov in the analysis room felt white (Anand) would be clearly better after the exchange of queens on d5. That's what happened. It was now clear that Anand had come out of the opening way better.

Black (Kramnik) needed to play for control of white squares. Into the middle game around move 17, Anand was better but not winning.

Kramnik, trailing in the match, went in risking giving a pawn, which he had no way of getting back.
By move 21 it seemed Anand with white was in a position to go three points up. He kept the pawn and Kramnik by now was fighting to survive. Anand on the prowl also did not castle – he had castled in only three of the six games!

By move 27 Anand was clearly better but he had no need to force things.

As the game progressed Anand was going up two pawns and he was keeping them and waiting. Over the next few moves from 37 onwards it was clear Anand was in winning position. And the computer was showing a win, too.

For his 40th move Kramnik had just 90 seconds, but time no longer mattered as Anand was almost home for a third win.

Anand kept it simple and went in for a crowd pleasing winning line and made it 4.5-1.5 for a three-point lead, which is surely too much for an outplayed Kramnik.

Wednesday is a day of rest and seventh game will resume on Thursday with Kramnik having white and Anand black. Anand has won last two games with black.

Anand consolidates lead, wins second time with black

Bonn (Germany), October 20

Viswanathan Anand may well have scored a decisive second win in the World Chess Championships with a stunning second win with black pieces over Vladimir Kramnik to go two full points ahead in the 12-game championship match.

The NIIT Brand Ambassador once again stayed in the Slav opening and as Kramnik attempted to try the same as he had in the third game, he was dealt another surprise by the Indian ace. Anand came in with a novelty and then crushed Kramnik once more to go 3.5-1.5 up in the match.

Kramnik, pushed to the wall, tried to create a lot of complications but in the end managed only to create a web for him and perished in 35 moves.

Anand indicated that he was once again in a preparation as he was also ahead on clock as Kramnik struggled with time, too.

Kramnik did have opportunities to equalize but he trued to take Anand into complex position, but instead of confusing his rival, he paid a stuff penalty as the Indian wrapped up the game. Kramnik erred grievously on the 29th move and then hung in hoping for an error from across the table, but it did not happen and he resigned in 41 moves.

There are seven more games in the match with Anand having white pieces in Game 6. The two players will share a purse of 1.5 million Euros equally regardless of the result of the match.

Anand outplays Kramnik, takes 2-1lead in world chess final

BONN, OCTOBER 17
Viswanathan Anand crushed Vladimir Kramnik with black pieces to score the first win of the 12-game World Chess Championships final here on Friday.

Anand, who had played Kramnik in the Slav Exchange in the first game of the 12-game match, found himself in the same opening once again. This time, unlike the first draw, the Russian was outwitted by the Indian in 41 moves.

Kramnik also seemed to be in time trouble as Anand squeezed him. Anand looked well prepared and went all out in a very aggressive manner. Kramnik did try hard to fight back, but Anand was always better placed, even though in a disguised manner, which later made it clear that he had a home preparation designed to deceive his opponent.

defending champion Anand, now leads 2-1 in the 12-game match, where the first to reach 6.5 will be declared the winner.

Both players will however share equally the prize purse of 1.5 million Euros.

Anand and Kramnik draw second game in World Chess final

Bonn, October 15

NIIT Brand Ambassador Viswanathan Anand went in for an opening other than expected with a Nimzo-Indian against Vladimir Kramnik but still came with the same result as in the first. The opening was in Nimzo-Indian Samisch Variation. They drew in 32 moves and the score in the 12-game final stands at 1-1.

With this both games have ended in draws and in the third game, Kramnik will have white pieces.

The NIIT-backed Anand instead of 1. e4, went in for a 1. d4. It was a sharp game from Annad's side and both players once again sized each other well. At no stage did either seem to have an any definite advantage.

Though there was no overt aggression, it was clear that there was greater probing in the second game than the first. Ultimately the duo decided to split the point and move on.

World chess: Tame draw in opening game for Anand against Kramnik

Bonn, October 14

Defending world champion Viswanathan Anand opened with a 32-move draw against challenger Vladimir Kramnik as the much-awaited 12-game World Championship final got underway here.

Anand played with black as the game opened in the Exchange Slav, which is just to Kramnik's liking for a solid game and it also blunts Anand's attacking style.
The opening game was more of a sparring match with both sizing up the other as the contest will warm in the days to come.

The early part of the game followed theory and soon after castling on the ninth move, Anand stopped copying Kramnik's moves. Soon after Anand departed from his copying of Kramnik's moves, the Russian instead of using the common move of castling at this stage, took the c6 pawn with his bishop.

Anand prevented the loss of a pawn by pinning the bishop but Kramnik could still use the tempo it takes Black to recapture. Kramnik also held greater sway over dark squares because his bishop was unchallenged.

Anand had the choice to sacrifice the b pawn to get active pieces and control of the open file. Kramnik meanwhile played a new move 14. Qb4 and it now remained to be seen how he hung to an extra pawn.

Into the middle game, Anand had activity while Kramnik's pawns were more dynamic and it was hard for him to stay a pawn up. But neither Anand nor Kramnik was in danger or mood to cede even the slightest of advantages. Once the two rooks came off it was a dead draw with opposite colour bishops. Kramnik tried to play for a while, but to no avail.

The second game of the match will be played on Wednesday with the first player to get to 6.5 points being adjudged the world champion. In case of a 6-6 draw, they will play a tie-breaker.
