Patna, December 8, 2009: East Central Railway, Danapur edged past hosts Purnia 7-6 via second sudden death in a pulsating quarterfinal match of the 61st Bihar state and inter-district football championships for the Moinul Haq Trophy in Purnia on Tuesday. With this win, Danapur entered the semifinals.
According to information reached here, both the teams were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation time. Fagu Tudu of Purnia scored the first goal in the 55th minute while Md Wahid of Danapur leveled the score in the 70th minute.
In the tie-breaker, both the teams scored four goals each. In the sudden death both the teams scored one goal each. The second sudden death came into force and Danapur managed to break Purina defence and scored the match winning goal and get ticket for the semifinals.
Mob attacks Danapur players, 5 injured
Later in the evening about 100 people said to be the supporters of Purnia team attacked Danapur players with lathis and other conventional weapons and injured five of them when the players were at their camp at Zila School.
The District Football Association Purnia alleged that police administration had failed to provide security to the players despite repeated request by the organizers.
Police reached the spot half an hour after the incident and took six persons into the custody.
