Hubnet AITA tennis: Saurav, Shweta clinch crowns

Patna, October 24, 2009:
Playing flawless tennis throughout the tournament, Bengal’s Saurav Panja tamed his state mate and higher ranked Manoj Sewa 6-3, 6-3 to win the men’s singles crown of the Hubent AITA tennis championships at the Patliputra Colony courts here on Saturday.

Sewa started the match as the firm favourite but Panja displayed an attacking game to stop his rival’s Juggernaut in a great fashion. Saurav broke Manoj twice in each of the straight two sets and captured the crown.

Karnataka girl Shweta G Khakandaki displayed another exemplary performance and won the women’s singles title outplaying Rani Smita Jain of IAF 6-2, 6-0. Rani was just no match to Shweta’s powerful ground strokes and serves.

Saurav Panja and Manoj Sewa, both from Bengal, captured the men’s doubles title beating Assam-Orissa pair of Anshuman Dutta and Chandrashekhar Mohanty 6-4,4-6 ,7-6(3) in the final.

Women’s doubles title went in favour of Depti Srivastava (WB) and Shwetha G Kakhandki (Karnataka), who beat Shilpi Jaiswal (Bihar) and Deepna Vazirani (Maharashtra) 6-3, 7-5 in a grueling final.

Dr. Akhouri B Prasad, secretary, Bihar Lawn Tennis Association, distributed the prizes. A.K. Sinha, secretary Patliputra Cooperative Society, was the guest of honour at the closing function.
