Bengal stormed into the final of the 11th East Zone veterans’ cricket championships trouncing Jharkhand by 88 runs at the Moinul Haq Stadium here.
The hero of the Bengal victory was former international Utpal Chatterjee, who took four wickets for 17 runs with his off spinners. Utpal was adjudged man of the match.
Asked to bat first by Jharkhand skipper and former Bihar Ranji Trophy team captain Avinash Kumar, Bengal scored 209 runs for the loss of nine wickets off 40 overs. OP Tiwari emerged as the top scorer for Bengal with his 42 runs. Pulak Das (34) and S Mitra (32) were the other useful run-getters. Leg spinner Avinash Kumar claimed three wickets for 31 runs while Deepak Kumar bagged as many wickets for 46 runs.
In reply, Jharkhand were all out for 121 runs off 31 overs. Sushil Kumar top scored with 48 runs in an otherwise dismal performance by Jharkhand batsmen. Deepak Kumar (14) and Subrato Bannerjee (15) were the other noteworthy contributors.
Besides Utpal Chatterjee’s four-wicket haul, S Bhattacharya and Probir Mukherjee got two wickets each for 19 and 11 runs respectively.
