Gurbaaz Mann maintains lead in round three

Gurbaaz Mann of Chandigarh

Mewat (Haryana) April 11, 2013: Gurbaaz Mann of Chandigarh will head into the final round of the PGTI Players Championship at the Classic Golf Resort in Mewat, Haryana with a two-point lead. Mann posted 37 points in round three on Thursday to take his total to 122 points. Delhi’s Rashid Khan is currently placed second with a total score of 120 points.

The stableford points scoring format is being followed in the tournament. Under this scoring format, each par accounts for two points, each birdie for three points, each eagle for four points, each bogey for one point and each double bogey (or worse) for zero points.

Gurbaaz Mann (41-44-37) made three birdies against two bogeys in the third round. The 30-year-old enjoyed a solid start to the day as he made pars on the first nine holes. He then misjudged the wind with his second shot and subsequently missed up and down to drop a bogey on the 10th. Mann earned his first birdie of the day on the 12th with an accurate chip that stopped a few inches from the hole.

Gurbaaz went on to three-putt the 13th for bogey before picking up birdies on the 14th and 15th. He drove the green to set up a birdie on the par-4 15th.

“I had changed the grip of my driver after round one and as it turned out the new grip was a little loose. As a result I didn’t drive as well as the first two days. The putting was good but unfortunately the putts didn’t role in for me today. I’ll look to fix the problem with the grip before of the final round. I feel I have a good chance as I’m still hitting it well and have a two-point lead at this stage,” said Mann, who will be looking to win his first title after a gap of seven years.

Rashid Khan (40-40-40) shot his third straight 40 to trail the leader by two points. Rashid’s round featured six birdies and two bogeys.

Gurgaon-based amateur Aienesh Ahluwalia (41-41-37) is placed third at 119 points while Mukesh Kumar (38-42-38) of Mhow is in fourth position with a total of 118 points.

The Delhi duo of Shamim Khan and Vikrant Chopra along with Kolkata’s Shankar Das are in tied fifth place at 117 points.
