Top golfers to take part in PGTI Players Championship


Pune, November 6, 2012: The Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) has announced the PGTI Players Championship presented by Poona Club Ltd.which is scheduled to be held at the Poona Club Golf Course from November 7 to 10. This tournament carries a total prize purse of Rs 35 lakh. The PGTI Players Championship will be followed by the sixth leg of the ‘Volvo World Golf Challenge’ on November 11, 2012, where local amateurs will compete for berths at the national final.

The top names participating in the event include Mukesh Kumar, Harendra Gupta, Om Prakash Chouhan, Shankar Das, Ajeetesh Sandhu and Abhijit Singh Chadha, to name a few. The top foreign golfers in the fray are Mithun Perera (Sri Lanka), Anura Rohana (Sri Lanka), Kunal Bhasin (Australia), Anthony Choat (Australia) and Md Zamal Hossain
Mollah (Bangladesh). The local challenge will be led by Gurki Shergill, Rajiv Datar, Jaideep Patwardhan, Aditya Bhandarkar, Pravin Pathare, Saurabh Bhaduri, Sameer M Shaikh and Sachin Nigade.

The sixth leg of the ‘Volvo World Golf Challenge’, Volvo’s prestigious international golf tournament played in over 35 countries, will follow immediately after the PGTI Players Championship. Amateur golfers from across the region will participate in the ‘Volvo World Golf Challenge’ at the Poona Club Golf Course on November 11, 2012. Volvo, the Official Automobile Partner of the PGTI, will host seven legs of the ‘Volvo World Golf Challenge’ across India in association with the PGTI in 2012. The two best-placed finishers at each event will qualify for the national final to be held later this month. The two winners from the national final will win an invitation to compete in the World
Final of the ‘Volvo World Golf Challenge’ next January.

Speaking from Delhi, Padamjit Sandhu, Director, PGTI, said, “We look forward to returning to Pune, a city fast emerging as a major golfing center in the western part of the country. Our partnership with the Poona Club Golf Course seeks to strengthen the foundation of the sport in this city by staging professional tournaments such as the
PGTI Players Championship.”

The course at the Poona Club, laid way back in 1918, is today widely acknowledged as one of the most improved and finest in India. This course has lightning-fast greens and each hole contains at least two or three well-placed bunkers to test the skills of a professional. The course also boasts of some huge water bodies. The Poona Club Golf
Course has the distinction of hosting two PGTI events in the same calendar year. The club has more than 1000 members in various categories. Most of foreign guests in Pune opt to play in this course.
