Sardar Singh to lead Indian hockey team in Champions Trophy


NEW DELHI, November 5, 2012: Midfielder Sardar Singh will lead 18-member Indian hockey team in the International Super Series and 34th Men’s FIH Champions Trophy in Australia.
The International Super Series will be held in Perth from November 22 to 25 while the FIH Champions Trophy will be held at State Netball Hockey Centre in Melbourne from December 1 to 9.

Selection trials to select the Indian team were conducted at SAI Centre, Netaji Subash Institute of Sports in Patiala from October 25 - 27, witnessed by Hockey India selectors Col. Balbir Singh, B.P Govinda and Thoiba Singh as well as Government observer Harbinder Singh and chief coach Michael Nobbs.

The FIH Super Series will also feature England, Australia and Pakistan. India will open its campaign against England on November 22 followed by matches against Australia and Pakistan.

In the FIH Champions Trophy, India are placed in Pool A with England, Germany and New Zealand while the hosts Australia, Belgium, Netherlands and Pakistan are in Pool B. India will open their campaign against England on December 1 followed by matches against New Zealand and Germany on December 2 and 4 respectively.

Fullback VR Raghunath will be the vice-captain of the team.
