UP boys win 2nd Hockey India Sub-Junior National North Zone title


New Delhi, October 20, 2012: Uttar Pradesh defeated Punjab 5-4 via penalty shoot-out in a nerve wrecking final of 2nd Hockey India Sub- Junior Boys National Championship (North Zone) at Rudrapur, Uttrakhand on Saturday.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw after the regulation time and 15-minute extra time. Uttar Pradesh scored its opening goal in the 4th minute through Amit Kumar Singh but Punjab leveled the score in the 26thminute with the field goal by Shamsher Singh.

In a shoot-out Abhay Kumar, Dhananjay Yadav, Abhay Singh and Aithsham Khan scored for Uttar Pradesh while Manpreet Singh, Lawerence and Harjeet Singh scored for Punjab.

Haryana beat Uttarakhand 4-1 in the third and fourth position match. Haryana scored through Gurmeet Singh (13th minute), Sumit (19th minute), Vikas (54th minute) and Govind S Rawat (65th minute) while Jonny Prasad (66th minute) score the only goal for Uttarakhand.
