Mukesh Kumar (67-69-66-71), the overnight leader, dropped a bogey on the first for the fourth day in succession. He came roaring back with a fabulous seven-iron tee shot on the fourth that ended up one foot from the flag and led to a birdie. Mukesh produced another magical moment when he drove the green on the par-4 14th hole that helped him garner his second birdie of the day.
The Mhow-based golfer held on to his lead till the end despite the bogey on the 18th to bag his sixth IndianOil XtraPremium Masters title. This also happened to be his 12th win on the PGTI, the maximum by any golfer on the tour.
Mukesh, who has now climbed from fifth place to third position on the 2012 Rolex Rankings, said, “It’s great to win my first title in two years. This win has lifted my confidence for the remainder of the season. My hitting was fantastic today. However, I have to work on my putting which has been an area of concern for some time now. I played conservative golf today and tried to find all the greens, a strategy that paid off at the end. The Digboi Golf Links has been one of my favourite courses over the years and I love coming back here every season.”
Harendra Gupta (69-67-68-71) was the runner-up as he finished two strokes behind Mukesh. Gupta’s final round of 71 included a birdie and a bogey.
Vishal Singh (67-65-72-72) of Jaipur claimed third place after he finished with an overall score of eight-under-276. Vishal’s final round featured two birdies and three bogeys.
