Jodhpur, September 27, 2012: On a day when women’s top-seed
Poulomi Ghatak, No. 6 Mouma Das and men’s No. 2 seed Soumyadeep Roy made their
exit from the ongoing National Ranking (Central Zone) Table Tennis
Championships at the Gaushala Indoor Hall, two new champions emerged in the
Junior Boys and Girls singles here today.
In the Boys singles, it was Delhi ’s
Utkarsh Gupta, who won his maiden title in the junior section, beating Abhishek
Yadav of PSPB 4-1, while Karnam Spoorthy from AAI wore out Delhi ’s Manika Batra in an close encounter to
win 4-3.
Mankia could have made it a Delhi affair but she faltered at crucial
occasions to concede vital points to her rival who excelled with her forehand
smashes and fine backhand returns. In fact, Manika should have won comfortable
as she was leading 3-1 at one point of time before letting her rival sneak in
and take the title away from her. On the other hand, Utkarsh was on the attack
right from the beginning and that paid rich dividends.
In the Youth section, Soumyajit Ghosh, G. Sathiyan, Harmeet
Desai and Nitin Thiruvengadam all moved into the semifinals. As for the Youth
Girls, Krittwika Sinha Roy, Yukti Roshini, Ayhika Mukerjee and Ankita Das
sailed in the last-four stage.
Left-handed Abhishek Yadav of PSPB proved too good for Delhi ’s Utkarsh Gupta to
win the title…. Utkarsh’s loss in the final was made good by another Delhi player in Manika
Batra, who defeated Karnam Spoorthy in the Junior Girls singles to wear the
crown.
Earlier, Utkarsh Gupta beat Sudhanshu Grover of PSPBA 4-1 in
the first semifinal, while No. 1 seed Abhishek Yadav accounted for No. 6
Anirban Ghosh 4-0. In the Girls semifinals, No. 4 seed Manika Batra beat
Suthirtha Mukherjee 4-1 and No. 3 seed Karnam Spoorthy defeated No. 2 Reeth
Rishya 4-2.
All but a couple of quarterfinal matches in the sub-junior
section proved to be crackers with the one between two PSPB academy boys
Abhishek Yadav and Lalrinpuia going down to the wire. Ultimately, it was the
left-handed Yadav who prevailed over the defensive Lalrinpuia 4-3.
Among the Junior Girls, Karnam Spoorthy regrouped herself at
the crucial juncture to wrest the initiative back from her North
Bengal rival Sagarika Mukherjee who, after being 0-3 down, showed
remarkable tenacity to run Spoorthy close.
Poulomi, Mouma, Neha bow out
In the women’s quarterfinals, top-seeded Poulomi Ghatak
bowed out when unseeded Soumi Mandal defeated her 4-1. She was joined by Mouma
Das and Neha Aggarwal but the last named did put up a fight against K. Shamini
before going down 3-4. On the other hand, it was so easy for Ankita Das, who
downed Mouma Das 4-1.
