Kolkata, September 7, 2009:
India’s last hope of picking up a medal in the 45th World archery championship was shattered as China handed India a crushing 221-216 defeat in the quarterfinals of the men’s recurve team event at Ulsan (South Korea) on Monday.
The third-ranked Indian trio of Rahul Banerjee, Mangal Singh Champia and Jayanta Talukdar, won the pre-quarterfinals against 11th ranked Malaysia at 217-207. But the sixth-seeded China proved to be a difficult customer. China won the contest 221-216.
China's victory proved in vain as they lost to second-seeded France in the semifinals. China will play Japan, the other losing semifinalists, in the bronze medal play-off. The gold medal will be contested by world champion Korea and France on Tuesday.
