Stage is set for the 70th Senior National and inter-state table tennis championships beginning at the Secretariat Hall here from the morrow.
The inclement weather generated by thick blanket of fog and chilly winds for the last couple of days had left the trains movement in tatters as the organizers were not able to disclose the number of teams reaching Patna on the inaugural day of the championships.
Till Saturday evening only two teams Rajsthan and Andaman Nicobar arrived here. Bihar Table Tennis Association secretary Mukesh Roy said all the affiliated units of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) would reach here by Sunday night. “We are all set for a grand opening ceremony at the Seretariat Hall tomorrow,” he said.
Rajasthan and Bihar players had a feel of the Secretariat Hall as they undertook strenuous practice sessions on the newly laid tables. A PSPB Academy player Nitin, who is representing Rajasthan, said his team would try hard to reach the quarter-finals. “We will perform well, he said.
Bihar team manager Sanjeev Shankar exuded confidence that hosts would do well. “ I put my money on Lekh Raj he will do well for Bihar”, he said.
TTFI arena committee member Vijay Kumar Agrawal said seven boards would be placed in the hall. “Only centre board will be used during team championships”, he said.
Meanwhile, defending champions Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) had been placed in the group A in both men and women’s section. In the group A of the men’s section, PSPB will lock horns with Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Himachal Pradesh while PSPB women will take on Assam and Chhattisgarh in their pool.
Hosts Bihar men were placed in Pool F along with Delhi, Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir. Bihar women had been clubbed with Dena Bank, Manipur in group D.
Men’s groups:
Pool A: PSPB, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Himachal Pradesh.
Pool B: RSPB, Karnataka, Jharkhand and Mizoram’
Pool C: North Bengal, Maharashtra B, Kerala and Manipur.
Pool D: Gujarat, Utttar Pradesh, Chandigarh, Andaman and Nicobar.
Pool E: Maharashtra A, West Bengal, Punjab and Meghalaya.
Pool F: Delhi, Harayana, Bihar and Jammu and Kashmir.
Pool G: Tamil Nadu, Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Tripura.
