PSPB men and women retained the Vizag Steel 70th National and inter-state table tennis championships titles like a flash flood sweeping away whatever comes its way at the Secretariat Sports Club Hall here on Thursday evening.
PSPB women trounced North Bengal 3-0 while PSPB men outclassed Railways Sports by an identical margin to wear the crowns.
Poulomi Ghatak led the PSPB onslaught after facing early inroads against Ankita Das of North Bengal. Ankita was all set for an upset win after winning the first two games 11-7, 11-8. But she faltered in the next three games as Poulomi found her feet as well as much-needed rhythm to nullify the challenges posed by junior India number one Ankita. Poulomi won the three games in a row 11-8, 11-7 11-8 to bag the first singles for her team.
In the second singles Neha Agrawal crushed Nandita Saha 13-11, 11-7,11-6 while Madhurika Patkar completed the formalities with great élan and comfort drubbing Kasturi Chakraborty 11-5,11-4,11-6 in the straight games to create a champagne moment for her team.
The men's final too proved to be an anti-climax as India number one Achinta Sharat Kamal slammed Anirban Nandi, who displayed a little bit resistance in the first game before bowing down 7-11, 6-11, 4-11.
India number two, Subhajit Saha of PSPB made it 2-0 in no time beating Sourav Chakraborty of Railways Sports 11-6, 11-9, 11-9. Railways Sayan Pual Roy delayed the PSPB victory for a while winning the second game 11-9. Sayan lost the first game at 8-11. Amal Raj fought back and won the next two games 11-5, 11-3.
Earlier Petroleum Sports Promotion Board men and women teams booked their berths in the finals winning their semi-final matches. PSPB men defeated Gujarat 3-0 and PSPB women beat Maharashtra A 3-0. North Bengal women blasted West Bengal 3-0 to join PSPB in the final. Railways Sports outclassed North Bengal men 3-0 to set up summit showdown with PSPB.
