Patna, January 5, 2009
Top seed Md Fariz of Tamil Nadu kept his reputation intact winning the first Deshratna Dr Rajendra Prasad memorial AITA ranking prize-money tournament at the Patliputra Colony tennis courts here on Sunday. Fariz beat Chndril Sood of Delhi in a roller-coaster final 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3.

Sourav Panja and Manoj Sewa (both West Bengal) clinched the men’s doubles title defeating Sood brothers of Delhi, Chandril and Lakshit, 6-3, 6-3. Nupur Kaul and Deepna Vazirani won the women’s doubles title defeating top seeded pair of Shilpi Jaiswal and Abhilasha Ahuja 7-6, 6-3.

The coveted women’s singles final between Shilpi Jaiswal of Bihar and Nupur Kaul of Maharashtra was halted by the fading light. When the play was called off for the day Nupur was one set up.

Fariz had a run for his money in the men’s singles final against agile Chandril Sood. The match lasted for about three hours. Fariz began well with his precision shots and hitting the mark. He won the first set easily 6-3.

In the second set, Chandril played his heart out and made his rival struggle for each and every point. Fariz was at his best hitting the balls effortlessly but Sood played the big points better to win the set after a grueling battle at 7-6.

Fariz baounced back in the decider hit the ball hard with great precision to dismantle the game plan of Sood. Fariz won the set and the match at 6-3.

In the men’s doubles Bengal pair of Saurav Panja and Manoj Sewa was too good for Chandril and Lakshit Sood. The 6-3, 6-3 score line in favour of Saurav and Maonj itself spoke their perfect team combination and the quality of tennis the pair produced in the final.

The women’s doubles final also witnessed a tough fight. The pair of Nupur and Deepna played the big points better to tame Shilpi and Abhilasha.

Earlier, Shilpi Jaiswal outplayed her younger sister Shruti in the semi-final 6-3, 7-5 to set up title clash with Nupur.

The final of the women’s singles began at the fag end of the day. Shilpi, who was playing her fourth match of the day, looked a bit tired from the very start of the match against Nupur. The Maharashtra girl, who looked like a bundle of energy, pounced upon her rival with flurry of shots and captured the first set at 6-0. The second could not begin due to poor light giving a much-needed break to Shilpi.
