Shilpi Jaiswal of Bihar booked her berth in the women's singles semi-finals of the Deshratna Dr Rajendra Prasad memorial AITA ranking prize-money tennis tournament outplaying Samia Rizvi of Uttar Pradesh 6-4, 6-0 at the Patliputra Colony courts here on Friday.
Deepna Vazirani and Nupur Kalu (both from Maharashtra) joined Shilpi in the semi-finals while another Jaiswal sibling Shruti, the younger sister of Shilpi, was tied 1-1 with Abhilasha Ahuja of Delhi when bad light stopped the play for day. Shruti won the first set 6-3 while Anhilasha clinched the second 7-6.
Deepn Vazirani got a bit resistance from Mohana Sarkar (West Bengal) before prevailing 6-4, 6-0 while Nupur Kalu (Maharashtra) took Susita Das (Orissa) in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to enter semi-finals.
Shilpi had a tough fight in the first set against Samia Rizvi, who started the match in a great fashion taking the first game of the match and then again leading 2-1. Shilpi bounced back and took three games in a row to make the score 4-3 in her favour.
Rizvi captured next two games to make it 4-4. Shilpi fought hard and won next two games and the set 6-4.
The second set story was entirely different as Shilpi cornered Rizvi with her big serves and ground strokes. Shilpi won the set and the match at 6-0.
Md Fariz (Tamil Nadu), Shantanu Rajput ,Chandril Sood and Lakshit Sood (all Delhi lads) entered the semi-finals.
Chandril caused the biggest upset of the day showing his state-mate second seed Rubal Shandilya of Delhi the door 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Shandilya had everything going for him in the first set. He won the set 6-2. But Sood executed some very good ground-strokes to win the second set 6-4. In the third set, nothing went wrong for Chandril as he comfortably won it 6-2.
