AG, Uttar Pradesh emerge champs


Patna, December 31
The final result of the All-India Audits and Accounts inter-zone volleyball championships came on the expected line. AG, Uttar Pradesh despite conceding the first set won the title defeating AG, Andhra Pradesh 19-25, 25-14, 25-20 and 25-17 in the final at the Mahalekhakar Bhawan court here on Tuesday.

There was a bit of hope for an upset in the final. The hope rose further as Andhra Pradesh began well capturing the first set at 25-19 giving no chance to their superior rivals to settle down. It looked UP men had taken the match for granted after beating AP in the league stage of the tournament. Two Raos Venugopal and Srinivas played exceptionally well on the net as well as in defence.

The initial part of the second set too saw Andhra men doing their task immaculately. AP got 9-4 lead within a few minutes. Sensing the gravity of the situation, UP men fought back with some power-packed smashes and timely blocks on over the net. Manoj Kumar Soni, Shiv Naresh and Satendra Kumar were the men to watch for UP. The change of strategy and a good team work helped hem capture the second set at 25-14.

There after, there was no looking back for Uttar Pradesh. The team by then found the rhythm and the much-needed team combination. UP won the third set at 25-20. In the fourth game, UP dominated the proceedings throughout the game and never allowed AP to bounce back. UP pocketed the fourth set and the match at 25-17.

Before the start of the final match, Chief Accountant General, Arun Kumar Singh, was introduced to the members of both the finalist teams.

Later, Singh distributed the prizes at a gala function. Praveen Kumar, organising secretary, welcomed the guests while Binod Kumar, general secretary, Bihar Civil Audit and Recreation Club, proposed a vote of thanks.
