HI recommends Sardar Singh for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award 2013


New Delhi, May 4, 2013: The Hockey India Award Recommendations Committee has recommended the name of Indian men team captain Sardar Singh for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award 2013.

Sardar Singh has been the captain of the Indian team since November 2012 and under his captaincy, India reached the semifinals of FIH Champions Trophy, Melbourne 2012 after a period of 30 years. India also won the silver medal in the 2nd Men’s Asian Champions Trophy, Doha 2012. In February 2013, the Indian team also won the FIH World League Round 2, New Delhi and thus qualified for the FIH World League Round-3.

Sardar Singh was recently declared AHF Player of the Year 2011. Sardar was part of FIH World Star Team in 2010 and 2011 and also nominated for FIH Player of the year 2012.

For the Arjuna Award 2013, Danish Mujtaba (captain of the Indian men team during the 22nd Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, Malaysia in March 2013), VR Raghunath (current vice-captain), forward Tushar Khandekar and Bharat Chetri (former Indian captain) have been recommended in the men’s category.

Captain of Indian women team Ritu Rani under whose leadership the Indian team has qualified for the FIH World League Round 3, 2013, Saba Anjum (former captain, Indian women hockey team) and defender Joydeep Kaur have been recommended for the Arjuna Award 2013 in the women’s category. 
   
For the Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award 2013, Hockey India Award Recommendation Committee has recommended current Hockey India Selector and Olympian Syed Ali.
