Peeyush shocks third seed Vivek in National Ranking South Zone TT Championships

Bengaluru, September 7, 2012:  Unseeded Peeyush Prasad from Delhi caused the biggest upset of the day when he toppled No. 3 seed Vivek Bhargvava of Rajasthan to move into the Junior Boys quarterfinals of the Indian Oil Servo National Ranking (South Zone) Table Tennis Championships at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium here today.

Two others seeded players who followed Bhargava were No. 4 Birdie Boro and No. 6 Lalrinpuia, both from the PSPB Academy. Earlier, No. 7 seed, Surojit Das, also from the Academy, bowed out in the second round of the main draw, thus making life easy for a few unseeded players.

Other top-seeded who eased into the last-eight stage were No. 1 Suddhanshu Grover from PSPBA, No. 8 R. Anandhraj from Tamil Nadu, No.5 Utkarsh Gupta from Delhi and No. 2 Abhishek Yadav. Three other paddlers who joined Prasad from the unseeded category included D. Sameera Kumar and K.R. Rohit, both from Tamil Nadu and Sabhav Virmani of Delhi, thus making it a Delhi show of sorts. Karnataka’s Sunand Vasan went down in straight games of 10-12, 5-11, 6-11 to R. Anandraj from AAI to end the campaign for the host state.

As for the junior girls’ all the top eight seeds kept their date with destiny and moved into the quarterfinals.  However, there was no respite for some of the top seeds like No. 1 seed Ankita Das, No. 6 Reeth Rishya, No. 8. Karnam Spoorthy from AAI and No. 14 Narasimha Priya, all of whom lost in the pre-quarterfinals of the Youth girls section. Ankita lost to Ayhika Mukerjee of West Bengal 11-5, 7-11, 7-11, 7-11 while Reeth Rishya found Sumana R. Krishnan from Indian Bank too hot to handle as the latter won 11-9, 1-11, 12-10, 11-9.

Prasad showed his wares to No. 3 seed Bhargava what perseverance can do. Playing on his opponent’s patience, combing with excellent forehands and tossed-up serves, the Delhi boy caught his Rajasthan rival on the wrong foot. After losing the first game at 7-11, Prasad launched an attack on his opponent to take the next two rather tidily 11-7, 11-5. But Bhargava was not the one to give up so easily and made a fine comeback to win the next game and tie the score at 2-all. In the decider, however, it was Prasad all the way, though the lead kept changing hands, and won lock, stock and barrel to book his quarterfinal place.

In the junior girls’ section, the match between No. 4 Mallika Bhandarkar and the sub-junior titlist here Naina from Andhra Pradesh stole a march over the rest for the simple reason that the latter was always in the game despite facing a tough defensive opponent in Mallika.

Mallika, starting in arrears with a 4-11 score, rallied to take the next two games at 11-7 and 11-9. But as she does regularly these days, the girl from Nagpur lost her fourth game very badly at 6-11 before picking up the threads to wrap-up the match at 11-6.

All the star players will start their campaign in both the men and women’s singles late tonight after having received first-round byes in the main draw. In Youth Boys’ category, those who have completed their first round engagements will play their pre-quarterfinal matches later tonight.
