Ghosh, Naina win sub-junior titles

Bengaluru, September 5, 2012:  West Bengal’s Anirban Ghosh beat PSPB Academy’s Lalrinpuia 4-3 to win the sub-junior boys’ singles title, while in-all Andhra Pradesh sub-junior girls’ final, Naina beat Sreeja 4-2 to take the crown in the ongoing Indian Oil Servo National Ranking (South Zone) Table Tennis Championships at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium here today.

Ashwin Subramanian of Maharashtra and Tulika Roy of West Bengal emerged Cadet boys and girls champions, respectively.

After being down 1-4, the No. 2 seed boy showed excellent maturity to stage a comeback and go 5-4 up only to lose the advantage to Ghosh in the decider. With a strong Bengal crowd egging on Ghosh, he made most of the unforced errors committed by his rival to romp home winners in a defence versus offence final.

Ghosh, in fact, was sitting pretty with a 2-0 lead but allowed the slow but steady Lalrinpuia quick recovery to tie the score at 2-2. Playing away from the table, the Academy boy was good in returning whatever was sent from across the net. But the No. 4 seed, playing a tactical game, gained ascendancy to surge ahead.

However, Lalrinpuia was up to his rival’s tricks and made it 3-3. But in the nerve-wrecking decider, Ghosh saw to it that he kept the lead to himself after leveling at 5-5 to win the game and the championship title. He will carry home a purse of 12,000 while the Academy boy will receive half the amount.

Naina, however, didn’t have any such problem against Sreeja despite the latter managed two games against her opponent. Naina proved too hot for Sreeja and in the final analysis, the former deservedly emerged victorious. She took home 10000 while Sreeja got Rs. 5000, the runner-up prize money.

The final between Ashwin and Jain saw some fluctuating fortunes as none of them was willing to yield any early ground to the other. However, Ashwin showed his supremacy with his top-spin servers and execution of some scorching forehands that upset the rhythm of Jain. After taking the first two games at 12-10 each, Jain seemed to come back into the game with a third-set win at 11-9. But Ashwin, leading comfortably in the fourth, there was no chance for Jain to make any further inroads.

In Cadet girls, Roy was well ahead of Sen in the first game that she won it easily. But Sen stretched a bit in the second before Roy taking it with some extra efforts. And in the third, it was just a cakewalk despite she allowed her opponent the luxury of eight points.

Boro, Sumana exit
Earlier, Birdie Boro and Sumana Saha, both from the PSPB and seeded No. 1 in the Junior boys and girls sections, respectively, bowed out in the semifinals. However, there was some respite for the PSPB team as No. 2 seed Lalrinpuia, who was stretched almost to the full distance by Ayush Tayal of Haryana survived to enter the final with a 7-11, 11-2, 12-10, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8 win.  He will take on No. 4 Anirbhan Ghosh from West Bengal in the final, to be played later this evening. Ghosh won 4-2 against Boro in the best-of-seven-games.

Unfortunately, all the Karnataka boys and girls, barring M.V. Spoorthy, failed to make progress beyond the first round of the main draw.  Spoorthy, who made it to the pre-quarterfinals, went down fighting to No. 5 seed Joyeeta Banerjee of West Bengal after putting up a brave fight. The seeded player won 11-7, 11-6, 11-13, 5-11, 11-6 in a thrilling five-setter.
