Hockey coaches empowered with high performance awareness

LUCKNOW, September 10, 2012: The 42 coaches who took part in the seven-day FIH-Hockey India Coaching and High Performance course will now watch hockey games from a different perspective, both tactically and technically, FIH Master Coach and FIH Coaching and High Performance Manager Tayyab Ikram has said.

“I can say with confidence that these coaches from across India are now empowered with greater high performance awareness and this will start reflecting in their coaching soon,” said Mr Ikram, who conducted the course with FIH Grade 1 Coach Siegfried Aikman during the 2nd Hockey India Junior Men National Championship.

For the first time in Indian hockey’s history, coaches did an online analysis of the men’s final between Germany and the Netherlands in the recent London Olympic Games. The course conductors gave the coaches, divided into 10 groups, a variety of technical and tactical tasks to analyse many high performance aspects of this game.

“There were a number of High Performance aspects that came to light as the coaches sat down to analyse Germany and the Netherlands,” Mr Ikram said. “I am sure that they will bring all these learnings into practice when they return to coaching players and teams. I am glad Hockey India has taken this initiative to conduct a course for coaches.”

One of the most important features of this course was online interaction. FIH employed the FIHSkype coaching for the first time in India. The coaches were trained for the Webinars before they went online on Skype network. They were also trained on IT and computer skills. The coaches were able to make and present PowerPoint and video presentations besides using the features of Game Analysis Software in interactive sessions.

During the week, the 42 participants watched matches in the 2nd Hockey India Junior Men National Championship at Guru Gobind Singh Sports College and did analyses of those games. Former internationals including Baljeet Saini, Mohammed Riaz, BJ Kariappa, Rajesh Chauhan, Surinder Kaur, Sandeep Kaur, Helen Mary, Satnam Kaur, Sandeep Sangwan, Sumrai Tete and Anurag Raghuvanshi were among the participants.
