Playing black Chauhan opted ‘King’s Indian defence’ against Devbrat Singh of Munger. After exchange of heavy pieces, both agreed to split the points. Vijay Kumar of Bhojpur opened the game with d-4 against Rakesh Ranjan, who preferred to adopt ‘London System’. Rakesh could not find a suitable line of action to convert his slight advantage into a win and agreed to former’s draw offer. Vijay with six points joined Devbrat on the second spot.
Kumar Gaurav of Purnia emerged as the youngest contender fighting to take a seat among the four qualifiers. He drew his game against Rupesh Ranjan of Patna in a well-fought game and would play the last round on the third spot with six points enjoining three seniors Saurav Roop, Ashutosh Kumar and Menhajul Hoda, who scored full points against their opponents Sanjiv Kumar of RBI, Vinay Kumar of Muzaffarpur and Saumitra Verma of Patna respectively.
