Indian men bow to Chinese supremacy in quarterfinals

New Delhi, September 27, 2015: In a rare feat, India’s men paddlers posted a 3-2 come-from-behind win over hosts Thailand to enter the champion division of the Asian Table Tennis Championships, only to lose to top-seed Chinese 3-0 in the quarterfinals at Pattaya (Thailand) today.

Now the Indians will have to meet Singapore next in 5-8 position matchestomorrow while Iran, who lost 0-3 to Japan in the quarters, will play Hong Kong. The winners of the two matches play 5-6 positions and losers’ 7-8 ties. Iran had posted a 3-2 win over North Korea in first division.

After all their hard work in the first division, it was a huge task against the champion side China that has the Olympic and world champions in their ranks and the Indians went down without a whimper. Xu Zin beat Harmeet Desai 11-9, 11-9, 11-3, Zhang Jike outsmarted G. Sathiyan 11-5, 11-3, 11-4 and Fan Zhendong accounted for Soumyajit Ghosh 11-6, 11-7, 11-8.

In the morning, the Indian men comfortably beat Uzbekistan 3-0 with Harmeet Desai beating Zokhid Kenjaev 3-0, Soumyajit Ghosh accounting for Elmurod Holikov 3-0 and G. Sathiyan following it up with straight games win over Gennadiy Levchenko.

But they had a major hurdle in Thailand with the entire crowd backing and as it turned out, both Gosh and Sharath Kamal, who was playing his first match in five months, started on a dreadful note possible, giving no hope to India.

Padasak Tanviriyavechakul began on a whirlwind fashion against Ghosh winning the first two games before Ghosh won the third. But a fluent Padasak was way ahead of the Indian as the former won 11-6, 1-9, 8-11, 11-4. All the pressure was on Sharath, the top-ranked Indian in the world at No. 52, who next took on Pattaratom Passara. It was a struggle for supremacy as Sharath won one and lost one as at the end of the fourth game it was 2-2. In the decider, Passara utilized the chances well and won 7-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 11-7.

From a no-win situation, Harmeet Desai brought India back in the match when he beat Chanakam Udomsilp 11-7, 11-9, 5-11, 11-9. This gave a flicker of hope as Sharath downed the top Thai player, Padasak in extended points game of 13-11, 12-10, 10-12, 14-12. Then it was left to Ghosh to take their No. 2 player, Passara. And the national champion won the decider 11-8, 11-9, 11-6, particularly the last game with a lot to spare.

But India’s women team was not as lucky as they went down to hosts in the semifinals 3-0 and will now play the 9-10 position match tomorrow against the Philippines, who lost to North Korea 0-3.

Earlier in the morning, Nanthana Komwong gave Thailand the perfect start by beating Mouma Das (11-9, 11-4, 13-11), she was followed by Suthasini Sawettabut who accounted for Manika Batra (10-12, 12-10, 14-12, 11-5), before Orawan Paranang brought matters to a conclusion by overcoming Ankita Das (11-8, 11-6, 7-11, 11-7).

Indian men TT team qualifies for Stage 2

New Delhi, September 26, 2015: Following the footsteps of the women’s team, the Indian men’s squad entered the second stage of the Asian Table Tennis Championships at Pattaya (Thailand) here today.

The Indian team, consisting of Achanta Sharath Kamal, Soumyajit Ghosh, Harmeet Desai, Sanil Shetty and G. Sathiyan, did their primary job of winning both their group matches against Philippines and Qatar to take the top perch in Group A.

Though the match against the Philippines was easy but the Indians had to really put up a good fight to beat Qatar 3-2 as that was the only way they could have entered Stage 2.

It was a tough opening for India as Harmeet Desai went down 13-11, 11-13, 4-11, 3-11, but Ghosh beat Abdulrahman Al-Naggar 11-5, 11-3, 11-5 to keep India in hunt. And then Sathiyan played brilliantly to beat Ahmad Al Mohannadi 11-4, 9-11, 11-9, 11-2 to put India in lead. Surprisingly, however, Ghosh went down in straight sets to Li Ping 6-11, 7-11, 8-11 to take the match to the decider. This time Harmeet Desai made amends against Abdulrahman in a tough battle to win 14-12, 11-13, 11-8, 13-11. He had to play three extended points game to overcome the Qatari.

Placed in the top half of the draw, the top-ranked Indian men will play their quarterfinals against Uzbekistan. In the semifinal they could run into either hosts Thailand or Malaysia, assuming they beat the Uzbeks. In the bottom half, North Korea will play Vietnam while No. 2 ranked team, Iran take on Kazakhstan.

Only two teams from stage 2 go to the Champion Division.

Indian women table tennis team just a win away form Champion Division qualification

New Delhi, September 26, 2015: The Indian team, comprising Mouma Das, Ankita Das, K. Shamini, Pooja Sahasrabudhe and Manika Batra, kept a clean slate in the women’s team first stage and topped Group B of the Asian Table Tennis Championships at Pattaya (Thailand) here today.

They are just one win away from qualifying for the Champion Division as both India and the Philippines have been given quarterfinal byes in stage 2. A win in the semifinals will ensure them a place in the Champion Division where they will get to rub shoulders with the top continental teams.

The Indians play the winners of quarterfinals between hosts Thailand and Vietnam while the Philippines will take on the winners of Iran and North Korea. The semifinals are slated for tomorrow morning. The rest of the teams will play to decide positions.

With just one team from each of the six groups advancing to the knockout phase, it was imperative for the Indian paddlers to top the group. And they did exactly that, beating first Pakistan 3-0, followed by a similar win over Nepal and, finally, Qatar to log six points on the table.

In the first group match against Pakistan, inform Manika Das beat Shabnam Bilal 11-5, 11-6, 11-3, Mouma Das accounted for Raila Kashif and Ankita Das 11-3, 11-1, 12-10 before Ankita Das defeating Aisha Ansari 11-5, 11-4, 11-7, all wins coming in just an hour.

In the second group match against Nepal, there was no difference in the pattern of victory except the fact that K. Shamini and Pooja Sahasrabudhe replacing Manika and Ankita. Mouma opened against Swechchha Nembang with a 11-5, 11-5, 11-1 win, then K. Shamini beat Rabina Maharjan 11-2, 11-2, 11-6 and Pooja Sahasrabudhe downed Selisha Khadgi 11-5, 11-6, 11-3. In fact, this victory came in a much quicker time.

With a cushion of four points from two wins, the Indian women now needed to beat Qatar. With just two changes in team combination—Anita for Mouma and Manika for Pooja—the Indians achieved their goal as Ankita in the first singles beat Maha Faramarzi 11-3, 11-4, 11-2, Shamini defeated Noora Al-Abri 11-5, 11-3, 11-8 and Manika cleaned up Kholoud Hussain 11-5, 11-4, 11-1.

“But the task in stage two will not be as easy, but I am confident of a good show by our girls,” said Coach Bhawani Mukherjee. “Hopefully we post good wins in the next stage,” he added.

The Indian men paddlers are in Group A and are clubbed with the Philippines and Qatar. The men’s team has earned this position, following their performance in the previous championships held at Macau.

World Junior Circuit Finals at Indore

New Delhi, September 25, 2015: India will be hosting the World Junior Circuit Finals at Indore between January 22 and 25. This was confirmed by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) in a communication to the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) yesterday.

Incidentally, this will be the fifth international event that India will play hosts this calendar year as the TTFI has already completed hosting Asian Cup at Jaipur (March), SAF Championships in New Delhi (May) and Indian Open at Indore (September). The Commonwealth Championships will be held at Surat in December followed by the World Junior Circuit Finals at Indore.

India had hosted the World Junior Finals in 2011 at Hyderabad, but then it was a combined event for the Cadet as well as Junior Boys and Girls. Ever since, the ITTF has separated the two events and conduct them in alternate years like they do in the World Championships—team and individual events.

The Indore World event, which is worth $36,000 in prize money, will see top 16 boys and girls competing. The selection of these boys and girls is based on the ranking points they have accumulated throughout the season—January to December—with entry limited to two boys and two girls per country.

As hosts, India will get one wild card entry each in the boys and girls sections, if none of the Indians fail to make the grade through rankings.

“Our aim is to build team for the future and the World Junior Circuit Finals provide the best platform for Indian paddlers to get the right kind of exposure,” said Dhanraj Choudhary, secretary-general of the TTFI.

Nisha stars in Haryana win, NCC show their intentions

 Haryana vs Tamil Nadu

New Delhi, September 17, 2015: Even as the girls from Haryanas Senior Higher Secondary School scored a convincing 5-2 triumph over Tamil Nadus St Marys High Secondary School, showing their continued dominance in the Junior Girls (Under-17) Subroto Cup Football Tournament, the 56th edition saw another strong contender emerging in 14 Battalion NCC squad from Imphal, who thumped a hapless Army Public School, Noida, 8-0 at the Ambedkar Stadium here today.

With the first set of quarterfinals slated for this Saturday, it will be interesting to watch both the Haryana and Manipur, if and when they came face to face during the knockout phase. But that is a scenario possible latter.

For now, how the Haryana girls, especially their captain Nisha Bagoria took it upon herself to help the Rewari team emerge winners on the day against a tough Tamil Nadu outfit. Both teams had a tight defence and excellent midfield working in close coordination. Yet what made the difference between winning and losing was Nisha, the quick-footed striker who accounted for three of her teams goals, one in the first half and two in the second session.

Nisha wishes to play for the country and has the potential to do that in the near future. The youngest in the family, she had a lot of convincing to do before her parent let her pursue the sport. The girl has 13 goals in her kitty from the two matches she had played so far.

Earlier, Varsha paved the way for a smooth passage bit hitting the target twice in the sixth minute and 32nd minute. Given the support that the Rewari girls got from teammates, it must be said K. Rasika of St Marys had to be the lone torch-bearer for her side. Whenever the ball came in her possession, she was able to make it count. But she would have wished the ball had come to her more often.

As for the NCC girls from Manipur, they played like true professionals and it was visible right from the moment they stepped on the field. Though W Raj Bala Devi was the teams star cast with five goals, including one during injury time in the 61 st minute, it TH Premita Devi (2) who gave the grand start in the fifteenth minute. From where it was Raj Bala Devis show even as S. Thoibi Devi slotted one in the 40th minute.

Raja Bala sprang into action in the second half opening with a goal in the 32nd minute. Her powerful grounder brooked no challenge from the rival goalkeeper. Then it became a routine affair for the striker who scored two minutes later and then in the 52nd and 54th before winding up with her fifth goal in the closing minutes. All the while the Noida outfit was a mute spectator unable to thwart the opponents surge towards them.

In this mayhem unleashed by both Haryana and Manipur teams, there was a sober kind of football between SAM GMR Sports School, Kerala, and Mamta Rukhmani Sewa Sangh, Chhattisgarh. Probably, the two teams were more worried about their safety than indulging in hardcore football. So much so, the teams preferred to play ball against one another and not press hard for the goals.  Yet, the Chhattisgarh team managed to score once in the 47th minute through Kritika for full points. And when the Kerala girls did press after being in arrears, it was too late in the day as Chhattisgarh stoutly defended their citadel.

In last match at Ambedkar Stadium, Delhi NCRs Rashtriya Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya defeated Sarla Bhupendranath Sarkar High School (West Bengal) 2-0. The one-sided match saw Pampa (18th minute) and Sunita (25) scoring for the winners.

Sainik boys scrape through: In the Under-14 Sub-Junior Boys section, Sainik School (Imphal) defeated Don Bosco High School, Panjim 3-2 at the NWC ground in the morning. The Imphal outfit struck all their goals in the first session itself with D. Mowarson opening the scoring in the first minute itself. He was followed by Jebeth Dousel (9) and Wronra (16).

When the teams resumed soon after break, the Goan side reduced margin through Shanon in the 28th minute and again in the 38th minute through Alger. But their desperate efforts to draw the match never fructified, thanks to a solid defence in the closing minutes of the Imphal side.

Siddesh, Archana crowned champions at India Open

Indore, September 12, 2015: The new-found confidence helped Siddesh Pande outwit top-ranked Manav Thakkar 4-2 in the Junior Boys singles final, thus denying the latter a double-gold treat in the 11Even Sports 2015 India Junior and Cadet Open Table Tennis Championships at the Abhay Prashal here today. Archana Kamath Giri, despite a threat, held on to win the Junior Girls crown when she beat Serala Jacob 4-3.

The Surat boy, who also holds both the national titles, had to be satisfied with the Cadet Boys title. Earlier, Manav had lost the Junior Boys doubles which the Saudi pair claimed.
Manav, leading 2-0, lost his cool and Siddesh making most of the situation made one of the finest comebacks in a final to make the contest a one-sided affair. Siddesh, using the flanks well, executed measures shots which brooked no challenge from the national champion. The sixth game exemplified the domination by Siddesh who led throughout. In fact, Manav got his first point, courtesy a service fault by his opponent. After that he could earn only two more points before Siddesh shutting him out with a lucky point as the ball hit the net to stay in.

Junior national champion Archana Kamath had to really fight to survive as Seraha Jacob, with excellent backhand execution, matched stroke for stroke in the final. When Archana went 3-2 up, it looked as if the title was just a few points away as she had run up a 5-0 lead in the sixth game. But credit must go to Seraha who, despite being at disadvantage, made it 5-5 and then, for the first time, went 8-7 up. From there, she could not be stopped and the match went into the last game.

In the decider, Archana led 3-0, but Seraha was not the one to give up easily. She fought and fought well to put some suspicion into her rival’s mind when she made it 8-all. Couple of Seraha’s shot hit the net and Archana, seizing the opportunity, wound up quickly with some good forehands to the relief of her parents in the gallery.

But it was a fitting final with both players attacked and the match had several good, long rallies and witnessed wonderful placing from Seraha. If she only had a good forehand, matching with that of her backhand, the title was Seraha’s.

Manav, Prapti win
Both Manav Thakkar and Prapti Sen, who claimed the Cadet crowns, would not have expected such easy finals as their opponents hardly made the winners sweat. The flow was perfect for both, though Shaurya Pednekar manage to extend Manav a bit in the third game of the final. However, Manav won on his second championship-point when Shaurya returned Manav’s service for the second time to send the ball sailing over with a perfect kill.

Seraha upsets Akula
Earlier, top-ranked Sreeja Akula was sent packing by No. 3 ranked Seraha Jacob in Junior Girls semifinals. Seraha, who was on a very good touch, outwitted Sreeja, who just about managed to win a game in the best-of-seven match. Seraha, who also won the doubles with state mate Maria Rony in the morning against Archana-Priyanka combine, continued her form unleashing an onslaught on Sreeja straightaway to run up with a 2-0 lead. The third game went Sreeja’s way but she could not come to terms with Seraha’s excellent service and wonderful forehand play.

In Cadet Girls, Srushti Haleangadi could not repeat yesterday’s form and went down to Prapti Sen in the semifinals. Prapti made most of her opponent’s error-prone game to move up.

In Junior Boys double, Ali Alkhadrawi and Abdulaziz Shulaybi from Saudi Arabia beat the stuffing out of Indian pair Sanish Ambekar and Ravindra Kotiyan, avenging their defeat in team final on the second day. The Saudi duo had complete control and covered the flanks and angles well to outsmart the Indians. This win fetched them their first gold while they already have a team silver. Incidentally, these were the only two medals that went the visitors’ way in what was a complete Indian sweep of medals across all sections.
