Russia thrash Singapore 7-0 in FIH Hockey World League Round 2 (Women)

New Delhi, March 7, 2015: With each team vying for a win on the opening day of the FIH Hockey World League Round 2 (Women), Russia claimed a convincing win over Singapore 7-0 in the second match of the day at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium today.

While both the teams were seen playing an attacking game in the initial stages of the match, Russia secured good opportunities to smash the ball in the net. The match proved to be a dry run as there were no goals scored by Singapore.

In the first quarter, Russia outplayed Singapore with their spirited performance and attacking moves, which stunned the opponents’ camp. Nine minutes into the game, Russian eves struck their first goal though the stick of Captain Irina Osipova when they attacked on Singapore’s half and scored with a field effort. With just four minutes to go for the first quarter, Ksenia Shamina netted another field goal in favour of Russia in the eleventh minute of the game to double the lead to 2-0.

The second quarter saw both the teams playing a much calculated game as Russia and Singapore did well with their respective attacks and defensive play. But, it was Russia who was awarded a penalty corner and Margarita Derpenkina stood successful in converting the penalty corner in the twentieth minute taking the score further to 3-0 in support of Russia.

Going to the third quarter of the game, Russia was seen in full swing to score back to back goals without letting the eves of Singapore to materialize any opportunity. Marina Fedorova notched a goal through a penalty corner conversion in the 38th minute. Continuing their supremacy throughout the game, Russia incorporated their planned strategies and played the game with a conviction of not letting the opponent score. Singapore earned a penalty corner but unfortunately failed to convert it into a goal and the score remained 4-0.
In search of their breakthrough, Singapore made desperate attempts to strike the goal post of Russia but failed to cash on the chances. While, Russia was at his best and exploited all the goal scoring opportunities, Anastasiia Reviakina penetrated a field goal in the 47th minute advancing the score further to 5-0. Striving to build on their lead, Marina Fedorova scored another beautifully crafted field goal in the 50th minute followed by another field goal in the 52nd minute by Olesia Petrova which helped Russia secure a comfortable win over Singapore 7-0.

Satisfied with the team’s performance, Russia Captain Irina Osipova said “There was some problem in the team today but we played well as it was difficult for us to play in bad weather conditions. We are satisfied with the scores but there is a lot more to do to improve the overall performance.”
