Poland outwit Ghana 4-0

New Delhi, March 10, 2015: The third match of the day saw Poland taking on Ghana where the former made their intentions clear of dominating the match at the Hero FIH Hockey World League Round 2 (Women). They were leading the game 2-0 at the end of first half and went on to add another two goals in the last quarter and winning the match 4-0.

Poland was in business immediately after the commencement of the game as they started building the pressure on Ghana. Just six minutes into the game a back slap by Magdalena Zagajska successfully reaching the nets opened the scorecard for Poland. Two minutes left in the quarter Poland had an opportunity to double the lead but missed the target.  Ghana had a few opportunities to equalize but because of lack of coordination at D resulted in they being unable to open their account. At the end of the first quarter Poland was leading 1-0.

Poland continued to dominate by keeping the pressure on the D of Ghana. 23rd minute into the game, Poland scored through a penalty corner. Amelia Katerla not wasting the opportunity slapped the ball past the goalkeeper and the defence, taking the score to 2-0. This dented the spirits for Ghana further as they tried coming back into the game.

The third quarter was a story of attacks, counter attacks and missed opportunities as both teams tried to score. With no goals added to the scorecard the third quarter proved to be a dry run which kept the scores at 2-0 with Poland still leading.

Looking more determined, Poland scored their third goal in the 48th minute as Oriana Walasek made no mistake in guiding the ball past the goalkeeper when she received a clean pass at the D and almost closing the doors for Ghana to make a comeback. With seconds left in the match Joanna Wittke passed the ball to Paula Slawinska who cleverly deflected it into the nets and scored the fourth goal for the team. This resulted in Poland winning the match 4-0.

Commenting on the performance Osei Boakye-Yiadom, Coach, Ghana said “It is very hard to accept that we lost but it was close. We had few chances but failed to capitalize unfortunately. We need more preparation and more learning. It is a big platform where we are performing and I am happy the team is getting better match by match.”

Happy with the win Krzysztof  Rachwalski, Coach, Poland said “It was a difficult game as we missed a few opportunities. We had a lot of chances and we cannot afford to lose out on them in the future matches. The team is playing as a unit and is getting good with their counter attacks and we are getting better with each game.”
