India lose 2-3 to Germany in Sultan of Johar Cup hockey final


NEW DELHI, November 18, 2012: Indian Junior men's team went down fighting to Germany 2-3 in the final of 2nd Sultan of Johar Cup hockey tournament at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Malaysia today.

Satbir Singh (24th minute) and Akashdeep Singh (67th minute) scored for India while Jonas Gomoll (11th minute penalty corner), Joshua Delarber (30th minute penalty corner) and Florian Adrians (49th minute) were on target for Germany.

Germany took the lead within the first quarter-hour through a penalty corner goal by Jonas Gomoll but India reduced the margin in the 24th minute through Satbir Singh.

Germany regained the lead in the 30th minute scoring through Joshua Delarber.

Florian Adrians scored 14 minutes into the second half for Germany to take a 3-1 lead. India strove hard to reduce the gap and scored through Akashdeep Singh with three minutes left for the hooter. The Germans defended hard to prevent India from equalising and taking the final into extra-time.

In the earlier match Australia finished third defeating Pakistan 3-2 via golden goal.

India, Malaysia play 3-3 draw


New Delhi, November 17, 2012: India played 3-3 draw against the hosts Malaysia in their last league match of the 2nd Sultan of Johar Cup at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium, Malaysia today.

India took lead in the 19th minute through a brilliant effort from Akashdeep Singh who slipped the ball past Mohd Hafizuddin Othman. Gagandeep Singh converted penalty corner in the 25th minute putting 2-0 on board for India.

However, Malaysia reduced the margin in the 28th minute scoring field goal through Mohd Noor Faeez Ibrahim. Malaysia leveled the score in the 45th minute through Firhan Ashaari.

Gurmail Singh put in good effort in the 58th minute to give India a 3-2 lead but Mohd Noor Faeez Ibrahim scored an equalizer in the 69th minute. India, who remained unbeaten in the five matches, had already qualified for the final to be played on Sunday, November 18.

India enter Sultan of Johar Cup final


New Delhi, November 15, 2012: Indian junior men team entered the final of 2nd Sultan of Johar Cup in Malaysia as they hammered New Zealand 3-1 in their fourth league match played at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium, today.

India dominated the proceedings from the start of the game. Mandeep Singh got the ball rolling with his goal in the 19th minute when his shot from the right beat goalkeeper Richard Joyce.

In the 27th minute Harjeet Singh found the target for India while Skipper Manpreet Singh scored in the 34th minute putting 3-0 on board till half time.

In the second half Benedict Van Woerkom scored the only goal for New Zealand in the 48th minute.

India remained the only undefeated team in the competition so far with ten points from four games. Also India remains on the top of the standings with their two earlier wins and a draw which includes a 2-0 win over Australia, 3-1 win registered over five times world junior champions Germany and a goalless draw against Pakistan in their third match.

Before playing final on the November 18, India will meet Malaysia in their last league match on Saturday.

India outplay Germany in Sultan of Johar Cup


New Delhi, November 12, 2012: India registered their second consecutive win against Germany 3-1 in their league game of the 2nd Sultan of Johar Cup in Malaysia today.

India got off to a brilliant start when forward Mandeep Singh picked up two quick goals in the seventh and eighth minute.  

Germany tried to reduce the margin in the 41st minute through Alexander Schollkopf.  
India replied a minute later with another quick goal through Talwinder Singh putting on board 3-1.

Germans continued to press forward and created some moves but Indian Goalkeeper Sushant Tirkey denied any chance to the opponents.

Indian forward Mandeep Singh was declared man of the match for his outstanding performance.
India will now meet Pakistan in their third league match on Wednesday November 14.
