Dabang Mumbai retain three stars for HIL 2016 and 2017

New Delhi, August 12, 2015: With the option of retaining a maximum of 3 Indian and 3 foreign players, the DoIT Sports Management owned Dabang Mumbai has retained 3 players while choosing to let go of the rest of the players in the team. The released team also includes the name of Tom Boon who was regarded as the biggest catch last season when the franchisee bought him for USD 103,000. The retained players include the name of Indian defender and penalty corner specialist Harmanpreet Singh, goalkeeper David Harte and defender Jeremy Hayward.

Realizing, that denying the opponents easy goals would be the key, the franchisee has retained the core group of defence. All the three players worked in complete harmony to ensure that the penalty corners were converted and the goal post remained protected by the strong line of defence.

Last season, while all eyes were on Tom Boon to come out and deliver, it was the young Harmanpreet Singh who left many awe struck as he effortlessly converted the penalty corners, giving his team the much desired goals. This was further complemented with his strong play at the defence chain as he with his skilful game gave the opponents a tough time to score on the opportunities that they created. What worked further in favour of the team and the defence line was the manner with which Jeremy Hayward and Harmanpreet Singh played in tandem. Their cohesion at the D proved to be a big asset for the team and complemented the efforts towards keeping the opponents strikers at bay.

The young Irish goalkeeper, David Harte who was bid and bought by the franchisee, proved his worth under the bar as the League progressed. With his unique and quick reaction time he went on to save many goals for his team, leaving the spectators awe- struck and wanting for more. His crucial saves helped contain the pressure on the forwards as they looked at scoring the important goals.

Speaking on the players that are retained by the franchisee, Viren Rasquinha, Strategic Advisor and Mentor, Dabang Mumbai said “It was a well deliberated decision keeping in mind the contributions of all the three retained players from last season. Each player adds a unique element to the team composition. Given Harmanpreet's brilliance as a drag flicker and a defender; he has a bright future and we are happy to have him in our team this year as well. Clearly, David Harte and Jeremy are international stalwarts and were an easy choice for us. I am confident we will work towards setting up a strong core for the team in addition to these players and build a winning team for the upcoming season.”

Speaking on continuing to represent Dabang Mumbai, Harmanpreet Singh said “The decision to retain me showcases the franchisee’s trust in my capabilities on the field. This is a huge motivation for me and I am aiming to take my game a step higher and will give my best for the team. Jeremy and I share a good coordination on the field, understanding each other’s play and how best to support David under the bar. I am looking forward to the next season and the new team that is going to get formed post the auctions. ”

New Delhi, August 9, 2015: After completing two successive years in the Hockey India League (HIL), the Kalinga Lancers will start the third HIL campaign with their key players who have been with the team since the first match. The Bhubaneswar-based franchisee has retained young Indian players - Lalit Upadhyay (forward), Devindar Sunil Walimiki (forward) and Gurjinder Singh (defender). Along with them, the franchisee has also retained young Australian talents - striker Aran Zalewski and goalkeeper Andrew Charter - for upcoming two seasons.

For Kalinga Lancers, the drag-flicker specialist Gurjinder proved to be the key asset as he has a successful record in converting penalty corners in HIL. In the 2015 HIL, he was the fourth highest goal-scorer in the league and top scorer for his team with five goals, all through penalty corner conversions. His teammate Lalit, who scored two spectacular goals in last season, played a key role in mobilising the forward line and helped his team to create attacks.

Australia’s goalkeeper Andrew Charter is another important member of Kalinga Lancers, who saved many matches for his team. He displayed his best performance at his home match against the defending champions Delhi Waveriders, where he foiled many attacks from the opponents and was awarded Man-of-the-Match for his excellent show. His fellow countryman Aran Zalewski is also developing into a new star of the team with his consistent performance and talents. He scored the winning goal against Delhi Waveriders at their away match in New Delhi and earned the Man-of-the-Match Award for his brilliant attacking skills.

In the last two seasons, Kalinga Lancers played with young players and they have showed commendable passion to fight against experienced teams and high-class players. In their first season in 2014, the young team finished last with two wins against the defending champions Ranchi Rhinos and Mumbai Magicians. In 2015 HIL, Kalinga Lancers started their campaign with a spectacular 6-3 win over Ranchi Rays and defeated Delhi Waveriders to finish fifth in the points-table.

Speaking on their retained players, Kalinga Lancers spokesperson Ms. Rina Mohapatra stated, “Being a young team and joining the League in the 2014 Season, we didnt have an opportunity to take part in the first auction. However, the young Kalinga Lancers players showed high-class talent and stunned everyone in the hockey fraternity with their passion. They played extremely well and we managed to beat top teams in League. This is the reason we have retained the core group of players, such as Lalit Upadhyay, Devindar Sunil Walimiki and Gurjinder Singh, who are now the poster boys of the team and hockey fans in Odisha love their game. The Australian duo  of Aran Zalewski and Andrew Charter are also great assets for the team and their experience will help us in the upcoming season. We are expecting to get some good players in the HIL 2015 Auction that will strength out team and take us to the finals in the 2016 HIL.”

Speaking on Kalinga Lancers’ retaining decision, Lalit Upadhyay said,“It’s a great feeling that the Team Management has trust in my abilities and retained me for the upcoming seasons. Their decision has boosted my morale and given me confidence to play better for my team in the HIL. Having Devindar, Gurjinder, Zalewski and Charter in the team is also a good feeling as I enjoy playing with them. They are great team-players and their experience will surely help the team to achieve more. We are also thankful to the Odisha crowd who always stood by our side and supported us whole-heartedly. We look forward to showcasing better hockey performance and giving the fans plenty of winning moments in the 2016 HIL.”

Jaypee Punjab Warriors to take on Delhi Waveriders in the second semifinal of HIL

New Delhi, February 20, 2015: It is a clash which Jaypee Punjab Warriors have been waiting for since the finale of the second season of Hero Hockey India League. The aim is to undo that result and finish the job with a win. On the other hand Delhi Waveriders will aim at making it to the third successive Hero Hockey India League final.

The second semi-final match tomorrow will witness Jaypee Punjab Warriors taking on Delhi Waveriders where both the teams will want to outwit the other and march to the Finals. While Jaypee Punjab Warriors won both their matches against Delhi Waveriders in the league phase but the former are aware that with Delhi, it will still be an uphill task to dominate and win. Delhi Waveriders on the other hand are coming back to form and which they proved in their last match against Uttar Pradesh Wizards where trailing by 2 goals to 0, they bounced back by scoring three consecutive goals leaving the Wizards stunned, though the match ended in a draw. With a form like this and a capability of bouncing back, makes Delhi Waveriders a strong contender for the Finale. But Jaypee Punjab Warriors too will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the tables are in their favour.

In the entire league phase, Barry Dancer coached Jaypee Punjab Warriors were faced with a situation where the team made a slow start, making the team vulnerable and in the process give in the early goals. But the positive aspect is by the second half the team effortlessly bounced back and difficult to beat once they get going. With Sandeep Singh converting the all important penalty corners and Jamie Dywer with his capability of tearing at the heart of the defence, the team will be targeting to attack from the start of the game and ensure Delhi doesn’t have an edge over them. Also all eyes will be on the speed demon SV Sunil who, once he gets in the run, defenders find it difficult to keep upto him and can single handedly enter the D of the opponents.

On the other hand, Cedric D’souza with a team which is the defending champions have finally found form and are clicking as a unit. While initially what the team found difficult was the circle penetrations but gradually the team has worked on their attack and are now easily penetrating the D and getting the all important penalty corners. Also what is working in the team’s favour is with Gurbaj at the back, is playing a great role in ensuring that the opponents forwards do not find it easy in the D plus the fact that he even comes forward and attack which is proving to be a big boost for the team. Also the cool as a cucumber Simon Child along with Lloyd Norris-Jones and Akashdeep Singh are ensuring that they outwit the defence with their stick work and passes.

Anticipating a good semi- final clash tomorrow, Coach of Jaypee Punjab Warriors Barry Dancer said, “It feels great to finish the league matches by being top of the points table. We are playing the semi- finals against Delhi Waveriders on Saturday and I am sure that it will be a tough game tomorrow. They have a good set of players and in order to combat the challenge, we will have to put in extra strength and double our efforts in order to win the match. We are working on our circle penetrations and ball possessions. The team is in full form and ready to put up a good show in the semi- final tomorrow.”

Delhi Waveriders and Uttar Pradesh Wizards play 3-3 draw

New Delhi, February 18, 2015: Playing their last game in the pool phase, both Delhi Waveriders and Uttar Pradesh Wizards were looking at a morale boost with another win in their kitty. While each was vying for a win, the clash ended in a 3-3 draw. Both teams have entered the semi finals and will aim to book their place in the Finale of the Hero Hockey India League 2015.

Just five minutes into the game Delhi Waveriders managed their first penalty corner and Rupinder Singh had the chance to take the early lead for his team but Sreejesh saved effortlessly and averted the danger. Delhi Waveriders again attacked when a good pass by Sardar Singh in the D was hit at the nets by Gurwinder Chandi but Sreejesh made a brilliant save again denying the home team the goal. Just seconds left for the quarter to end, Uttar Pradesh Wizards bagged their first penalty corner of the day but was not taken cleanly and hence the team was unable to capitalize on the opportunity. The quarter ended 0-0 with both teams yet to open their scores.

Uttar Pradesh got their second chance of a penalty corner in the 20th minute and Raghunath made no mistake in ensuring that he hit it past the goalie and into the nets. With the goal the scorecard opened 1-0 in favor of the visiting team. The second half was dominated by Uttar Pradesh Wizards in the entire session as they kept the pressure on Waveriders by penetrating through their defence, but unfortunately were unable to capitalize on the opportunities during the entire session. With no further goals scored the first half ended 1-0 with Delhi Waveriders trailing.

In the 34th minute Pardeep Mor from the right flank hit hard to Jeroen Hertzberger standing right in front of the D and who made an easy flick into the nets leaving the Delhi goalie stunned and no chance to react. This helped Uttar Pradesh take the lead further. With 2-0 on the board Delhi Waveriders attacked and half way into the quarter Gurwinder Chandi from the baseline passed the ball to Lloyd Norris Jones standing right in front of the goalkeeper. There was no defence between them, hence a clear chance for him to open the score, but he missed it. Minutes left into the quarter, Uttar Pradesh Wizards got their third penalty corner, but this time Raghunath was wide of the goal. In the 45th minute it was Delhi’s chance to convert through a penalty corner and Andrew Hayward ensured he hit the ball past Sreejesh and helped his team open its account. At the end of the quarter the score stood at 2-1 with the Wizards leading.

The fourth quarter saw the game changing gears as three back to back goals were scored in a matter of three minutes. The equalizer goal for Delhi Waveriders came in the 51st minute when Matt Ghodes entered the D with the ball, beating two defenders before he hit the ball past Sreejesh taking score to 2-2. The next minute the Delhi Waveriders took the lead in the game with Simon Child scoring a brilliant field goal and the scorecard stood at 3-2. Going immediately into the attack Uttar Pradesh got a chance to equalize in the 53rd minute through a penalty corner and VR Raghunath was on target and the ball found the nets taking the score to 3-3. With seven minutes left it was any ones game from here. Both the teams tried taking the lead in the game but failed to add any further goals to their tally and the game ended in a draw 3-3.

Man of the Match, VR Raghunath, Uttar Pradesh Wizards said “It was important for us to create opportunities in the form of penalty corners and ensuring that we converted them into goals. It was equally necessary we equalized post the defence lapse in the third quarter and I am happy we bounced back.”

Speaking on the team’s performance Cedric D’Souza, Head Coach, Delhi Waveriders said “The most important thing for us was to enter the semi-finals in a winning momentum which did not happen today. The opponents had a lot of counter attacks in the beginning. I am very happy with the team’s performance today. We made a couple of mistakes and we will work on them and come out as a solid unit.”

The Chandigarh-based team managed to earn their first penalty corner in the ninth minute and penalty corner specialist Sandeep Singh scored the first goal of the match, giving a dominating lead to his team in the first quarter. Australian drag-flicker Jake Whetton injected the ball in the D and Sandeep Singh hit the ball into the box without giving any chance to goal-keeper Tyler Lovell. The early lead in the match boosted the morale of the players and they continued their attacking game to create more chances.

Coach Barry Dancer’s team got another chance in the 15th minute when the home team earned two back-to-back penalty corners and they converted their second attempt in another goal of the match. Australian forward Kieren Govers took the first shot but was foiled by the goalie. Australian defender Christopher Ciriello received the second shot and he sent the ball straight into the net. After receiving two early jolts, Ranchi Rays could not recover in the first half and they switched into a defensive game. By the end of the first quarter, Jaypee Punjab Warriors led the match by 2-0.

In the second quarter, Coach Harendra Singh’s boys stepped-on the field with better strategies and managed to keep the ball in their control. The visitors kept charging on the opponents’ half and both the teams fought hard to dominate the quarter. Jaypee Punjab Warriors forward players SV Sunil, Whetton, Govers and Affan Yousuf tried hard to create opportunities to score more goals but they faced stiff challenge from Ranchi Rays defenders led by Kothajit Singh, Birendra Lakra, South African Justin Reid-Ross and Australian Fergus Kavanagh. The Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s team opened their account in the 26th minute when drag-flicker Manpreet Singh injected the ball in the D and skipper Ashley Jackson hit the ball hard towards the box. Dutch goal-keeper Stockmann tried to stop the ball through his left leg but his attempt went in vain and Ranchi Rays scored their first goal of the match. However, Ranchi Rays was still trailing by 1-2 by the end of second quarter.

In the third quarter, both the team came on the ground with new energy and tussled with each other to keep control of the ball. Ranchi Rays managed to earn penalty corner in the beginning of the quarter and they were looking to convert it in their second goal. Drag-flicker Manpreet Singh injected the ball and Ashley received it well. However, in the next moment, he lost control of the ball and it was snatched by first rusher Gurmail Singh. In the rest of the quarter, both the teams struggled hard to create opportunities and score more goals, but the score-line remained 2-1.

In the fourth and last quarter, players gave their best efforts for their team and played harder till the final whistle. Jaypee Punjab Warriors earned three back-to-back penalty corners but Ranchi Rays displayed their mettle and thwarted all the attempts by the home team. Jaypee Punjab Warriors kept on charging but Ranchi Rays did not allow them to run free. Ranchi Rays again earned a penalty corner and once again, Ashley scored goal for his team to equalise the score-line 2-2. Drag-flicker Manpreet injected the ball into the D which was received and smashed acutely by Ashley into the box.

The second goal lifted the morale of Ranchi Rays and they charged-on with quick passes in the last minute of the match. They earned another penalty corner and Ashley converted it in his third goal of the match. The penalty corner was repetitive of the previous one, where Manpreet perfectly injected the ball in D and Ashley sent the ball in the net by out-foxing world–class goal-keeper Stockman. With this outstanding hat-trick by Ashley in just four minutes, Ranchi Rays outplayed Jaypee Punjab Warriors second time in the Hero HIL 2015 and reached the top of the points-table with 35 points.

Speaking after the match, Jaypee Punjab Warriors Coach Barry Dancer stated,“Though we lost the match but I am very much pleased with the performance of the team. We have played better than our previous tie against Ranchi Rays and we have taken a step forward towards the Final match. We lost the match in the last moment and we accept the fact that Ranchi Rays performed better than us in penalty corners today.”

Captain of Ranchi Rays Ashley Jackson said at the presentation ceremony, “We are very happy to win our second match against Jaypee Punjab Warriors. This was still not our best game today. They were on top of us for the large part of the game but we managed to come out on the winning side. This shows the character that this team has got. We weren't good in the first half but came out better in the second half. It was nice to see the improvement. We need to learn from today's match which will stand us in good stead for the semi-finals. We will work hard on all the areas of improvement so that we can give a solid display in the semi finals."

This is something we need to work on before we enter the knock-out stage”

The visiting team again had a chance of scoring when they were awarded a penalty corner but due to the tight defence line-up of Uttar Pradesh Wizards, Mumbai failed to materialize the chance as first quarter closed with scores at 1-0, with Mumbai in the lead.

The hosts came out a lot more attacking in the second quarter and did not allow the opposite team to avail any further chances of scoring while their strikers kept taking frequent shots at the goal. Their efforts bore fruit in the 29th minute when Nithin Thimmaiah scored a field goal to level the score 1-1 just few minutes before the first half of the game came to an end. Dabang Mumbai tried to keep the ball in their possession but the Wizards made sure they got no such opportunity.

With maximum ball possession in the third quarter, Uttar Pradesh Wizards once again displayed an attacking game but could not reach for the nets. The Wizards had a penalty corner but due to the lack of player coordination they could not make use of the chance availed. Dabang Mumbai once again took the lead when Glenn Turner in the 44th minute gently touched the ball as it swung past the strong guards of PR Sreejesh to touch the mesh. The scoreboard showed a score of 2-1 with Dabang Mumbai ahead of the home team.

Dabang Mumbai tried to restrict Uttar Pradesh Wizards from scoring further in the last quarter as they solidified their defence line up for the same. This could not stop UP Wizards from looking out for prospects to score as Harjeet Singh found a break in the defence and sliced-in a beautiful field goal to equal the score at 2-2. In the dying moments of the game Nikkin Thimmaiah scored a stupendous field goal, the decider for this match as Uttar Pradesh Wizards clinched win in the last moments and defeated Dabang Mumbai 3-2.

The Rays looked at creating scoring chances in the closing minutes but could not avail any as the final scores stood at 2-0, handing a much required triumph to the Delhi Waveriders.

Post the match Cedrid D’Souza, Head Coach Delhi Waveriders said “We are working on our rhythm from last month and I think we have started clicking as a unit. The reason behind the win today is the team bonding and communication that the boys have on the field as well as off it. While the entire team is defending and attacking together, we still ensure that we do not give any gaps for the opponents to counter our strategy”.

Speaking post the loss Head Coach, Ranchi Rays, Harendra Singh said “As we have reached the semi-final we gave chances to new players like M B Aiyappa and continuously switched the position of other players. Due to that our pace was sometimes fast and sometimes we lagged behind. However we kept the ball possession on our side and kept the opposition busy. It was a good match for us and a practice for all the players as the knock-out stage will be played right here”

With just two wins, six lost matches and one draw, Kalinga Lancers have 16 points so far and will now play their last pool match against Delhi Waveriders with an intention to record a win and better their stand in the pools table, before the League enters the semi-final phase. Efficiently led by Vickram Kanth, the Lancers will put in their best endeavors to restrict the Waveriders from breaching their strong defence while their strikers will look at creating as many goal scoring opportunities as possible to emerge as victors.

Speaking ahead of the next match, Head Coach of Kalinga Lancers Jude Felix said, “I am happy with the way the team has performed in their last match. We managed to draw against the Waveriders in our previous encounter. This is also going to be a crucial game for us and I hope the boys will play similarly with utmost coordination and give their best. Delhi is a strong team and has been performing really well in the League so it’s going to be challenging for us.”
