Sanil Shetty celebrates his men's singles title win
Ankita Das in action

Patna, January 12, 2014: Two young champions, Sanil Shetty and Ankita Das, made the Platinum Jubilee year Senior National Table Tennis Championships their own, crowning themselves with the singles titles at the Patliputra Sports Complex here today.

No. 2 seed Shetty defeated his PSPB team mate Harmeet Desai 4-2 and No. 4 Ankita Das, also of PSPB, drubbed AAI’s Krittwika Sinha Roy 4-0 to take home the winners’ purse of Rs.2.30 lakh and Rs. 1.45 lakh, respectively. Incidentally, Shetty is the first national champion to emerge from Mumbai after the great Kamlesh Mehta, who last won the title in 1995.

The best part of the championships was that the old faces faded away while two youthful heroes emerged on the horizon. Fortunately, the men’s singles too had all the ingredients befitting the final, unlike the women’s final which never rose to any dizzy heights.
The left-handed Shetty proved too hot for Desai who, in the morning, had upset all calculations and form to account for Achanta Sharath Kamal. Desai, however, failed to raise his game in the final and his game lacked aggression.

In fact, Shetty was on a rampage right from the start which allowed little leeway to Desai. In a way, the latter was astounded by Shetty’s attack on both flanks, more so on his opponent’s faulty forehand. It paid rich dividends as Shetty reeled off winners after winners to unsettle his rival. For a brief period, though, Desai tried to come back but once Shetty ran up a 7-3 lead and 10-5, it was all over for Desai.

One jarring note, however, was the match was stopped for a brief while as chief minister Nitish Kumar walked up to the dais when Shetty was about to serve on his championship point. Luckily, it didn’t cost him heavily except the couple of points he lost to Desai.
As for Ankita, she hardly broke a sweat against Krittwika and it is reflected in the score line against her AAI opponent in the women’s final. Krittwika was found wanting on many fronts and Ankita just exploited them to her advantage.

Making a mockery of the seeding yet again, No. 1 men’s player Sharath and No. 3 K. Shamini in women’s singles had bowed out without a fight. Desai, who has never won against Sharath, was the better player on view today as he controlled the match tactically. To begin with, Sharatah was serving bad—three bad misses in the first game set the tone—and his misery was compounded by his weak backhand. Desai, on the other hand, was full of aggression and exploited Sharth’s weakness on the backhand to the fullest.

Desai made up for his ineffective forehand by blocking well and employed more of his backhands. Deasi took calculated risks at the long ball, his Achilles heel, and came up with several surprise winners besides playing a consistent, percentage game. Sharath, who is good at short ball, tried his luck but Desai was up to it all the time. Except for the third game, where Sharath showed glimpses of a comeback, he knew he was never in the match.

Sharath admitted as much after his semifinal loss. “My serves deserted me and was the basic mistake which I continued with. My rhythm was missing and I made far too many mistakes at the net and my backhand shots were awful. Harmeet played superbly and exploited my weakness to the hilt,” said a disappointed Sharath.

No. 2 seed and left-handed Sanil Shetty also surprised Soumyadeep Roy in the second semifinal. Roy, though managed to take a set off Shetty, was unable to cope with the breezy and aggressive Shetty.

Results:

Rains force players to take their lunch inside Patliputra Sports Complex

Players and officials were forced to take their lunch inside the Patliputra Sports Complex on the 5th day of the 75th Senior National and Inter-State Table Tennis Championships in Patna on January 11, 2014 as intermittent rains spoiled the huge food court outside. The huge shamiyana installed outside for providing food (breakfast to dinner) had been serving the needs of the players for the last six days.

Defending champion Ghosh ousted; women top seeds fall

Sudhanshu Grover of Rajasthan, who sends Amal Raj packing

A player suffers cramp and seeks physio help

Patna, January 11, 2014: Defending champion Soumyajit Ghosh bowed out of the men’s singles when he lost tamely to his PSPB teammate Harmeet Desai 1-4 in the quarterfinals of the 75th Senior National Table Tennis Championships at the Patliputra Sports Complex here today.

Harmeet will take on top-seed Achanta Sharath Kamal, who disposed Haryana’s Sourav Chakraborty 4-0 in the first semifinal tomorrow. The other semifinal will pit former national champion Soumyadeep Roy against No. 3 Sanil Shetty. Roy defeated Sudhanshu Grover 4-1 while Shetty accounted for G. Sathiyan 4-2 in the quarterfinals.

One expected the defending champion to put up a semblance of fight in the quarterfinals. On the contrary, Ghosh played a subdued game while Desai kept his attacking posture through the match. It was Desai who took the first game without breaking a sweat but Ghosh came back strongly in the second. But what changed the complexion of the match was the third set where Ghosh showed glimpses of his top quality game, only to lose 10-12.

That’s what game Desai the confidence as he never looked back after that. Even in the fifth game, Desai was up 9-6 and allowed Ghosh level at 9-9. But a silly mistake at net by Ghosh, with his serve on, gave Desai the chance he was looking for. On his second serve, Desai only needed to keep the ball on table with a power forehand which he did admirably.

Though Sanil Shetty and Satihyan were more or less on equal footing, the left-handed Shetty had an edge over the right hander. And that showed in their quarterfinal match which Shetty won comfortably in the end, despite losing two sets to Sathiyan. As for Soumyadeep Roy, he was in the best form of his life against a determined Sudhanshu Grover. The veteran, who is now turning out for West Bengal, simply mowed down Grover.

Top 2 seeds out
Reigning champion K. Shamini made a rough weather of her quarter-final outing against 31-year-old Mouma Das and escaped to safety to win 4-3. But both No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, Madhurika Patkar and Pooja Sahasrabuddhe went down to AAI’s Krittwika Sinha Roy and Reeth Rishya Tennison, respectively. Reeth downed No. 2 seed Pooja 4-1 Krittiwika Sinha Roy, showing great determination, outplayed the top-seed 4-3.
In the first semifinal tomorrow Shaimini will take on Krittwika Sinha Roy and in the second Ankita will clash with Reeth.

Results:
Men: Quarterfinals: A Sharath Kamal bt Sourav Chakraborty 4-0 (11-2, 11-4, 11-8, 11-4), Harmeet Desai bt Soumyajit Ghosh 4-1 (11-9, 7-11, 12-10, 11-5, 11-9), Sanil Shetty bt G. Sathiyan 4-2 (11-7, 11-7, 8-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-4), Soumyadeep Roy bt Sudhanshu Grover 4-1 (11-5, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9).
Women: Quarterfinals: K. Shamini bt Mouma Das 4-3 (11-8, 10-12, 11-8, 11-6, 10-12, 6-11, 11-7), Ankita Das bt Poulami Ghatak 4-1 (11-3, 5-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-3), Reeth Rishya bt Pooja Saharaabuddhe 4-1 (11-4, 5-11, 13-11, 11-9, 11-7), Krittiwka Sinha Roy bt Madhurika Patkar 4-3 (9-11, 11-5, 11-13, 11-9, 9-11, 11-4, 11-8).

Haryana men, Railway women annex doubles crown

Anindita Chakraborty and Pallabi Kundu of Railways with women's doubles trophy

Men’s pair of Jubin Kumar and Sourav Chakraborty of Haryana with their doubles trophy

Patna, January 11, 2014: The men’s pair of Jubin Kumar and Sourav Chakraborty did Haryana proud when it snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to annex the doubles title in the 75th Senior National Table Tennis Championships at the Patliputra Sports Complex here today.

The duo beat Rajasthan’s Vivek Bhargava and Sudhanshu Grover 3-2 to win a major national title for Haryana.  The women’s double crown went to Railways’ pair of Anindita Chakraborty and Pallabi Kundu, who beat Airports Authority of India’s Nikhat Banu and Krittwika Sinha Roy 3-1.

The Haryana duo was on the verge of defeat with Grover and Bharagava on championship point at 10-9. But Grover, in his anxiety, received the ball at an awkward angle from left-hander Jubin only to send it out, giving a lease of life to Haryana. Earlier, Rajasthan combine led 9-6 only let the Haryana players come back.

At 10-10 it was anybody’s match when both the pairs picked a point each to be at 11-all. When the service returned to Rajasthan, Chakraborty returned well, to earn the crucial point. Then it was left to Jubin finish off the job on his serve and Grover, yet again, sent a long ball for Haryana to celebrate.

Title for Railways
The experienced Railways duo simply outwitted the AAI combine. The pair was slow to take off, particularly after losing the first game. But the two veterans came to grip with their combination play which confused the AAI duo of Nikhat and Krittiwika. However hard the two tried, they were unable to come out of the mire in spite of stretching the RSPB pair in the third game to 10-12. With a comfortable 2-1 lead, Anindita and Pallabi just completed the demolition job in the next in less than 5 minutes.

Former champion Anthony Amal Raj was the biggest seed to fall in the morning session as he bowed out to unseeded Sudhanshu Grover 3-4 in the pre-quarterfinals. But there were quite a few prominent players like Subhajit Saha from North Bengal, Maharashtra A’s Aman Balgu, Gujarat’s Jignesh Jaiswal, Railways’ Souvik Kar, Haryana’s Sarthak Gandhi from the bottom half and both Devesh Karia (Gujarat) and Souav Chakraborty (Haryana) from the top half made their exit in the round of 32.

Promising Mizo boy Lalrin Puia and PSPB Academy’s Abhishek Yadav also failed to survive but had played too well in earlier rounds to enter the pre-quarterfinals. Puia lost to top-seed Sharath Kamal and Abhishek Yadav to Harmeet Desai, both going down by the same 0-4 margin.

Coming back to Amal Raj’s game, it was difficult to say whether the No. 2 seed played too badly or Grover pulled it off with his perseverance. In fact, it was a combination of both as Amal Raj was definitely struggling against another offensive player like him. Grover seized on the momentum to put the issue beyond Amal Raj (8-11, 11-2, 7-11, 11-6, 5-11, 11-8, 11-2).

Amal Raj started on a rousing note winning the first game and going up 2-1 before Grover hitting him back with superb attacking game on both flanks to unsettle his opponent. Once Gover made it 2-2 Amal Raj cleaned him up 11-5 with an excellent fast game which saw fewer rallies. Amal Raj was back in his groove with superb backhand flicks and close to the table play which brooked little challenge from Grover.

But the Rajasthan player surprised everyone, including Amal Raj, to take the next game at 11-8. Probably, this rattled Amal Raj who was found wanting in his strokes and made several unforced errors. This only helped Grover’s cause as he kept growing in confidence to stop the frustrating former champion very early in the decider. Grover will now take on Soumyadeep Roy in the quarterfinals to be played later tonight.

In women’s singles all top four seeds entered the pre-quarterfinals but both No. 2 seed Pooja Sahasrabudhe and No. 4 Ankita Das went through some rough weathers before making the cut. Pooja struggled before overcoming Andra Pradesh’s Nikhat Banu 4-2 (11-2, 9-11, 11-7, 6-11, 13-11, 11-3) and Ankita Das struggled against Suthirtha Mukherjee. Ankita won 4-2 (13-11, 8-11, 7-11, 13-11, 11-7, 11-7).

Results (Doubles Finals):
Men: Jubin Kumar/Sourav Chakraborty (Har) bt Vivek Bhargava/Sudhanshu Grover 3-2 (11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 7-11, 13-11).

Women: Anindita Chakraborty/Pallabi Kundu (RSPB) bt Nikhat Bhanu/Krittwika Sinha Roy (AAI) 3-1 (9-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-5).

Sharath, Madhurika top seeds; Ghosh, Shamini relegated

Patna, January 10, 2014: Top-ranked Indian Achanta Sharath Kamal, after having been relegated to the No. 6 position in the seeding list at Raipur nationals last year, has regained his No. 1 spot in men’s singles event of the 75th Senior National Table Tennis Championships following the main draw taken out at the Patliputra Sports Complex here today.

In the women’s section, it will his Petroleum team mate Madhurika Patkar who has been seeded No. 1, thanks to her two title victories at the Gandhidham (Central) and Thanke (West) zonal events earlier this season.

Normally, players are seeded as per the ranking points they accumulate during the domestic events throughout the year. In the case of Sharath, who has not played in a single tournament in India this season, the technical committee has considered his world ranking—he is currently world No. 50—as the basis for the nationals here.

“Since Sharath has been representing India at various IITF pro-tours this season and is the top-ranked Indian in the world, he has been seeded No. 1 here,” said competition manager Ganeshan N. Iyer. “For other players, we have purely taken into consider their ranking points accrued from the domestic events,” he added.

Soumyajit Ghosh, who is the men’s singles title-holder, has been seeded fifth behind former national champion Anthony Amal Raj (No. 2), Sanil Shetty (No. 3) and Harmeet Desai (No. 4). Ghosh, who missed a few zonals, and it reflects in the ranking points he was able to garner this season. Since Ghosh form part of the top-half, he is likely run into top-seed Sharath in the semifinals, barring early hiccups.

With Madhurika getting the top perch in seeding list, reigning women’s champion K. Shamini—she has failed to win a single zonal title this season—has been pushed down the ladder at No. 4 with just 225 points and drawn in the top half. In fact, Pooja Saharashrabudhe, who has 255 points, is seeded at No. 2.  Though both Neha Aggarwal and Ankita Das have 220 points each, the Siliguri girl has been seeded No.3, ahead of her PSPB team mate from Delhi, for her better performance.

This would mean that Ankita, along with the other three women, can take it easy with a first-round bye while Neha will have to sweat it out against qualifier Shailoo Noor Basha of Andhra Pradesh later tonight.

Unlike the four women, none of the men seeds has been given any luxury of bye in the first round. All top-seeds will have to get down to business straightaway soon after the women’s singles main round matches tonight.

Meanwhile, 50 women and 54 men topped their group to join the elite paddlers after the qualification matches that ended this evening. There were a few upsets of sorts like Sagarika Mukherjee from North Bengal in group 47 and veteran Arul Selvi in group 19, representing Indian Bank, who failed to cross the qualification hurdle. But for those who have made the cut, the acid test begins later tonight.

PSPB men retain title, women regain crown

PSPB men (top) and women (below) with their trophies in Patna on January 9, 2014

Patna, January 9, 2013: The formidable Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) men trounced West Bengal 3-0 to extend their reign over the Barna Ballack Cupfor yet another year, while their women regained the Jayalakshmi Cup, after beating North Bengal 3-0, in the team finals of the 75th Senior National Table Tennis Championships at the Patliputra Sports Complex here today.

The domination of their men’s team was never in doubt, thanks to a solid line-up they boast of. However, there was a lingering feeling about their women’s team consistency in spite of the quality they always unveiled. It has often misfired and PSPB women had very badly lost to Maharashtra A at Lucknow in 2009 and at Raipur to Delhi last year, to cite a few recent examples.

In fact, there were a few occasions in today’s final giving rise to a similar situation, particularly when national champion K. Shamini took on the challenge of North Bengal’s Sagarika Mukherjee. The 16-year-old gave enough scare to spoil Shamini’s reputation before the latter could overcome that phase with a fine forehand winner in the decider of the second rubber.

Shamini was somewhat slow to start off and was pushed to the corner by the young North Bengal paddler. The PSPB player brought in variety and put on display an array of brilliant strokes on both the flanks. Yet, while leading 2-1, Shamini was given a jolt when Sagarika, blocking and serving well, restored parity after the fourth game. In the decider, the lead kept changing hands quickly but Shamini held on to her nerves to romp home.
Probably, the use of long pimple racquet by Sagariaka posed certain problems and Shamini took time to adjust her game. “I couldn’t come to terms with the slowness of the ball initially,” admitted Shamini after the match.

What followed was a simple annihilation by Ankita Das who disposed of Sukanya Bose, the weak link in North Bengal’s ranks, in straight games of 11-9, 11-8, 11-7 in less than 15 minutes. The team’s ploy to rest Neha Aggarwal and instead pit Ankita, a North Bengal player, against the ‘state’ team worked wonders for PSPB. Earlier, Madhurika Patkar was also off colour in the first rubber against Nandita Saha, but Madhurika managed to ward off the threat. Nandita, who employed flat serves to bemuse Madhurika, managed to take two games off her opponent.

In the men’s team final, Soumyadeep Roy took the first game off Soumyajit Ghosh, giving some glimpses of his old self. But Ghosh, who just returned from Sweden after playing a string of league matches, arrested any further advance by Roy in a fine close-to-the table display with powerful shots. The old legs of Roy couldn’t compete with the younger and well-oiled Ghosh’s who won 3-1.

Achanta Sharath Kamal, who is here with a mission to “take his rightful place,” accounted for Sourav Saha without any inhibition. Absolutely looking fit, the top-ranked Indian, currently No. 50 in the world, demolished Sourav Saha 11-8, 11-7, 11-2 in 12 minutes to put PSPB 2-0 up. Then Anthony Amal Raj, after a fine rally at 11-10 in the third game, who returned from Poland, beat Sougata Sarkar in straight games for a 3-0 sweep.

Sarkar, down 0-2, saved a match point at 9-10 but could not capitalize on it as he erred at the net soon after to give service back to Amal Raj who did not waste any time to send down a powerful forehand winner after some fine rally from both. It was all over bar the shouting for the West Bengal camp as the PSPB players exchanged handshakes and high-fives in celebration.

Results (Team event finals):
Men: Petroleum Sports Promotion Board bt West Bengl 3-0 (Soumyajit Ghosh bt Soumyadeep Roy 16-14, 7-11, 11-7, 11-4, A. Sharath Kamal bt Sourav Saha 11-8, 11-7, 11-2, A. Amal Raj bt Sougata Sarkar 11-9, 11-8, 12-10).

Women: Petroleum Sports Promotion Board bt North Bengal 3-0 (Madhurika Patkar bt Nandita Saha 6-11, 11-6, 12-10, 9-11, 11-5, K. Shamini bt Sagarika Mukherjee 9-11, 11-5, 11-7, 10-12, 11-8, Ankita Das bt Sukanya Bose 11-9, 11-8, 11-7).

Dominant PSPB through to finals, North Bengal women stun West Bengal

Poulomi Ghatak in action at the Patliputra Sports Complex in Patna on January 8, 2014

Patna, January 8, 2014: Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) men and women entered the final of the team championships underlining their supremacy yet again in the 75th Senior National Table Tennis Championships at the Patliputra Sports Complex here today.

In the semifinals PSPB men defeated Gujarat 3-0, their women accounted for Airports Authority of India in the identical margin, North Bengal women blanked West Bengal 3-0 and West Bengal defeated Haryana 3-0. West Bengal men had last reached the finals at Kolkata in 2010 and for North Bengal women it is their fourth entry in final.

PSPB men, with a star cast, were never under any threat as Soumyajit Ghosh, Achanta Sharath Kamal and Harmeet Desai went about their routine in a clinical way against Gujarat to sound out a clear warning to their final opponent. But the West Bengal team, with Soumyadeep Roy in the best form of his life, was also up to the task to outclass Haryana, whose Jubin Kumar and Sourav Chakraborty, failed to find their quarterfinal rhythm. Earlier, the Haryana duo had surpassed all expectations to beat Tamil Nadu 3-1 in the last eight.

K Shamini began the semifinal proceedings for PSPB and took less than 25 minutes to dispose of Ayhika Mukherjee, though the former gained through several negative points. However, Madhurika Patkar played true to her expectation and Krittiwika Sinha Roy was finding it difficult to counter her opponent. There was a semblance of fight between Neha Aggarwal and Nikhat Banu, who managed to take a game off the PSPB girl, before being subdued.

But the second semifinal turned out to be a totally one-sided with six-time national champion and experienced Poulomi Ghatak and Mouma Das losing tamely to their North Bengal opponents Sukanya Bose and Sagarika Mukherjee, currently No. 1 player in the junior section. After Nandita huffed and puffed her way to win the first singles against a determined Suthirtha—she leveled score after being 0-2 down—Mouma played a sub-par game to lose to 16-year-old Sagarika.

Poulomi, perhaps conserving her energy for the individual events, would rather like to forget her match against Sukanya Bose. Down 0-1, Poulomi looked like coming back as she led 10-4 in the second game only to lose her way from there. Though she did win a game, Poulomi was definitely at the receiving end. In fact, only Suthirtha, appearing in her first senior nationals, showed real tenacity in the entire West Bengal setup.

Delhi bow out
Delhi women, last year’s team winners, bowed out of the championships losing 1-3 to North Bengal. In any case, Delhi had a very little chance after Neha Aggarwal, who fashioned Delhi’s win at Raipur last year, was chosen to represent PSPB this year. And that took a heavy toll on Delhi’s fortunes.

In the pre-quarters finals, only two matches in the men’s team event—Mizoram vs Gujarat and Maharashtra B vs North Bengal—went down to the wire while the match between Maharashtra B and Gujarat in the women’s affair went beyond expectations with the latter ending as the loser. Gujarat, despite leading 2-0, surrendered to the guile of Maharashtra B girls.

Patna, January 7, 2014: The battle lines have been drawn loud and clear at the end of Stage 2 proceedings in the women’s team events in the Platinum Jubilee Year Senior National Table Tennis Championships at the Patliputra Sports Complex here today.

Though team title holders Delhi, as expected, topped Group A, they have been drawn to meet a tough Kerala in the pre-quarterfinals. Similarly, the second finished Chandigarh team has a most arduous job scaling the peak against PSPB, the No. 2 seeded team here. The Airport Authority of India, who topped group F will meet Rajasthan, who finished behind Tamil Nadu in group D.

However, the matches between Assam, who beat Punjab to make the cut, and North Bengal will be interesting despite the latter’s stature. Tamil Nadu will run into Odisha while Maharashtra A are slated to take on Andhra Pradesh in the pre-quarterfinals. Gujarat, who are taking on Maharashtra B, should sail into the quarters without a hiccup, particularly after the way Gujarat girls had played their group matches
.
Though Gujarat took the top perch in group E, there was a tough battle between Assam and Punjab to decide the second spot from the group. Assam defeated Punjab 3-2 to romp home with Mahasweta Batsallya shouldering the team’s burden. She won both her singles to see her team through.

As for the men’s team matches, a clear picture in half a dozen groups will emerge only after the set of fourth round matches. However, there is hardly any doubt about the qualifications of top teams.

Teams like PSPB, West Bengal, Gujarat, RSPB and North Bengal, to name a few, are virtually through to the second stage matches even as they await their opponents from other groups. There was, however, a surprise in the form of Mizoram, comprising PSPB Academy players, Lalrin Puia and Lalhunlua, have been making right waves. The team from the northeast beat Andhra Pradesh 3-1 in the first round and is very much in line to make the grade.
