Delhi go down fighting against Kerala

Guwahati, January 16, 214: The Petroleum and Sports Promotion Board Academy (PSPBA) boys drubbed Tamil Nadu 3-0 to enter the Junior Boys semifinals of the 75th Junior and Youth National Table Tennis championships, here at Deshbakt Tarun Ram Phukan Indoor Stadium on Thursday.

Joining them in the semifinals were West Bengal who beat Andhra Pradesh, Delhi downed Rajasthan 3-0 and Maharashtra A beat North Bengal. All the quarterfinals turned out to be absolutely one-sided with the same 3-0 score line.

In the Junior Girls section, Maharashtra A beat Assam 3-1 while North Bengal defeated Andhra Pradesh 3-2, West Bengal accounted for Tamil Nadu 3-1 and Kerala outsmarted Delhi 3-2 in the best match of the evening which went down to the wire.

The PSPBA boys, led by Abhishek Yadav, made it a one-sided affair against their rivals. Yadav gave PSPBA a winning start by beating S. Nikhil 11-4, 11-4, 11-8 and Lalrin Puia outlasted K.R. Rohit 10-12, 9-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-9 in a defence versus offence battle to put his team 2-0 up. Then both Yadav and Puia combined to beat Rohit and Nikhil 12-10, 11-7, 11-4.

While Andhra Pradesh had very little chance against West Bengal’s Anirban Ghosh and Arjun Ghosh in singles, the Andhra duo of Manash Ghosh and Subhendu extended the West Bengal pair of Harsh Lahoti and Ali Mohammad in a grueling doubles event to 6-11, 4-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-9. Delhi, on the other hand, did not have much trouble against Rajasthan.

Sabhya Virmani defeated Pankaj Kumar in straight games, while Utkarsh Gupta struggle before overcoming Subham Ojha 11-6, 7-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9 to give Delhi 2-0 lead. Then it was left to Hmanshu Jindal and Sabhya to put Pankaj and Subham in their place. Maharashtra A’s Nishad Shah accounted for Akash Nath in straight games while Rabindra Kotiyan was extended by Raja Kundu and then the doubles team of Nishad and Rabindra faced a stiff resistance from Akash Nathan and Subhankar to win 3-2.

As for the Junior Girls quarterfinals, Assam made a bright start with Kritika Upadhaya against Ashlesha Trehan winning the first rubber 7-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-8. But the hosts team could not withstand the onslaught of Maharashtra which had the likes of Shruti Amrute and Manasi Chhajed. In fact, Shruti restored parity against Akanshya with a straight set win and then combined with Manasi to beat Kritika and Akanshya to enter the semifinals.

Given the composition of team, Delhi did well to give a good fight to Kerala, but Aanchal Malhotra, having to play two singles, proved to be the weak link as she lost the crucial rubber to Serreha Jacob despite managing to level the score 10-10 in the second game after trailing 6-10. Once Sereha won the game13-11 to go 2-0 up, the third game was a formality as Delhi’s lost tamely.
In both the Youth Boys and Girls matches, the favourite teams made it to the quarterfinals which are slated for later tonight.
