Bajrang, Babita Kumari qualify for World Wrestling Championship

New Delhi, August 4, 2015: Asian Games 2014 & Commonwealth Games 2014 Silver medalist Bajrang has finally qualified in the 61 kg free style category for the World Wrestling Championship to be held in Las Vegas, USA from 7-12 September 2015. The final trial for 61 kg was conducted by Wrestling Federation of India at SAI Training Centre in Sonepat today, where Bajrang defeated Sonu 4-0.

Bajrang had a back injury due to which he didn’t participate in the trails conducted by Wrestling Federation of India last month. In fact, he had requested the Federation in advance mentioning his inability to attend the trails and considering his past performance, the selection committee took the decision that the finalist of his weight category in the trials will only participate in the Kazakhstan Tournament while final candidate for World Wrestling Championship 2015 will be selected after trail with him. On the basis of this decision of selection committee, Sonu was selected only for Kazakhstan tour concluded last month.

Bajrang who had won bronze medal in the World Wrestling Championship 2013 said “I am feeling better now and during past few days I have worked hard on my back injury. I have already won bronze medal in the World Championship but this time my target will be to win gold and qualify for Rio Olympic Games 2016. We still have a month left for the World Championship and our coaches are working hard in every area”.

In the Women’s 53 kg category, Commonwealth Games 2014 Gold medalist Babita Kumari beat Nirmala Devi 6-2 to book her berth for 2015 World Wrestling Championships.

Due to her injury, World Championship 2012 bronze medalist Babita Kumari didn’t participate in the trials conducted by Wrestling Federation of India in Lucknow last month. But considering her past performances, the selection committee decided to conduct the finals of her trials after the Kazakhstan tour, where Nirmala Devi, the other finalist in the category, represented the country.
